For the first year my 2009 VW Golf Comfortline TSI 118 was fantastic, there were no problems at all and I was telling everybody how great it was, but then the problems started. First I had a shudder when taking off, which was fixed by a new clutch pack. Next the vehicle began to vibrate excessively, which turned out to be a blown cylinder requiring a new engine. The very next trip the gearbox failed; we couldn't select a gear and were stranded. This was the last straw for my wife and I, with my wife refusing to drive the car again. I was forced to trade the car in at a considerable monetary loss.
We have had a few similar reports of problems with the VW engines, and the DSG gearbox in particular, and have taken the issue up with VW in an attempt to clarify the situation. At this point we don't have an explanation, other than some anecdotal information that suggests that if the DSG gearbox fails, it does so at quite low kays, and that if that doesn't occur it seems to run troublefree. I know of a number of people with Golfs and the DSG gearbox who haven't had any issues.
