Tyres cause confusion

I am looking for the best performance-for-dollar new tyres for my car. I have noticed that no matter what brand or price the tyre is, they all have the same generic-looking, square-tread pattern. Should I buy the $130, better-known brand name (Dunlop or Bridgestone) or the $80 brand (Firestone or Siam)?

There are more things to a tyre than tread pattern: rubber compound and construction, for instance. When choosing a tyre, first make sure it is the correct size as originally fitted to your car by its maker. That way you are assured that it has been matched to your car in terms of ride comfort, handling and wear. You should also make sure that the tyres you fit are of the correct load and speed rating. Once you've satisfied those criteria then look at things such as tread pattern and branding.
