AFTER reading with interest the problems with the Ford auto transmission oil cooler, I have fitted an external oil cooler to my 2004 Fairmont, bypassing the radiator. The work is being done by my Ford dealer, who told me they have had problems with the oil cooler, but they are fitting an aftermarket unit. They told me the Ford product is smaller and still uses the radiator cooler, which I believe does not really fix the problem. The total cost of supply and fit is a little more than $500, which is cheap compared with a gearbox replacement.
IT'S nice to know your Ford dealer is looking after your interests. It's unusual to find a dealer as forthright as yours appears to be, and helpful to boot.
