    Thumpin' bad times

    I HAVE a 2000 six-cylinder, four-speed auto AU II Fairmont Ghia in very good order with 85,000km on the clock. The auto thumps occasionally on third gear up, and thumps nearly every time into first when coming to a stop. I reported these problems before the warranty ran out and it has been back about five times and each time they adjust electronics and it is fine for a few days, then starts up again. The thumps sound as if they are in the rear end of the car.

    THUMPING in Ford autos is usually caused by the S5 solenoid, Geoff Clay of CPA Automatics says, though it's unusual to get it at such low mileage. The problem is usually seen as a flare-bump while upshifting. It can happen on one-two shifts as well as higher shifts. Geoff says it's worth having the transmission serviced, even though manufacturers do not recommend servicing as much as they once did.
