Thirsty falcon

IN THE past year my 1989 EA Series II Falcon sedan, which has done only 40,000km, has started using significantly more fuel. It's now 14.28 to 18.86 litres/100km, the average being 16.2 litres. A full tune-up has been done and injector cleaner used for several months with only very slight improvement. I always use premium fuel. How much fuel should this vehicle use? What can be causing it to use so much? Or is this as good as it gets?

YOU'D expect to get 10 to 12 litres/100km on average, so your fuel use is high. The car has done low kilometres, so it's not engine wear. Check the peripherals -- filters, plugs, coils, injectors -- and have a mechanic check for diagnostic codes that might give you some clues.
