Slower and lower?

LIKE Barry Warrillow, I have a 2004 Hyundai Elite and, according to my checks, when the speedo shows 100km/h the car is travelling at 91km/h. Does the speedo reading effect the odometer reading? If the speedo is out by 10 per cent, is the odometer also in error? In my case the vehicle may have travelled only 9000km when the odometer shows 10,000km. The vehicle also has a fuel consumption reading. Could this also be showing 10 per cent too low? A 10 per cent odometer error could affect the length of the new-car warranty and, to a minor degree, the resale value of the car.

FIRST go out and check the accuracy of the odometer. Markers on posts used to line many highways are quite accurately placed by the road authorities. Head out on a nearby highway and locate one of these markers and stop safely alongside it, noting your odometer reading. Reset your trip meter to zero, then drive off to the next marker and stop again, noting the reading on your odometer and trip meter. Preferably do this over a distance of 5-10km, and repeat it a number of times to improve the accuracy. That will give you an indication of the accuracy of your odometer.
