Shuddering clutch

I AND a few friends own 100-Series Toyota LandCruisers with non-turbo diesel engines, and we constantly experience a shuddering clutch in first and second gears and reverse. A mechanic told us the only way to fix the problem is to get a heavy-duty aftermarket clutch kit fitted.
