Proton oil leak

Our 1995 Proton Wira gave us excellent service until 2005 when the car developed an oil leak at the head gasket area below the distributor. The repairer removed head and gasket, machined head surface, then refitted the head with a new gasket, topped up all fluid levels and pressure tested it. Last week, to my horror I discovered the same oil leak has reappeared. Proton told me it was an inherent fault with this model, however the mechanic assured me that we should be covered by one form of guarantee or another. The car has been booked in for assessment and repairs, but what happens if they renege on the assurance I was given and bill me again? What grounds do I have to challenge this?

The car is 16 years old so under normal circumstances I would say you have little claim against Proton. If they have agreed to cover the cost of repairs I would have them put it in writing before you take the car in. Once it goes in and the repairs are done you have little comeback, you are then relying on the good will of the company.
