Octane information

THERE is a variety of petrol to choose from with different octane levels. But what about LPG? LPG users have no choice. And what is the octane level of LPG? Does it vary from one company to another?

WE ASKED the experts at LPG Australia. LPG Autogas supplied to retail sites is governed by the Fuel Quality Standards Act 2000 and the LPG Autogas Determination of 2003. The Act requires that LPG available for sale has a minimum motor octane number (MON) of 90.5. It is not directly comparable to the petrol numbers expressed as research octane number (RON), but this minimum MON rating is about the same as 102 RON. In practice LPG is typically higher than the minimum to ensure 100 per cent compliance. In some instances the RON for some LPG mixtures can be higher than 110. Some suppliers have conducted trials of higher-octane LPG, but supply arrangements would make it extremely difficult to provide such a product nationally.
