I HAVE a 2000-01 Nissan Patrol 3.0-litre turbodiesel purchased in 2002 with 6000km on the odometer. It has been used to tow a caravan around Australia for the past four years and now has done 81,000km. While travelling I met many Patrol owners who had engine failures between 80,000km and 150,000km, which Nissan covered either under warranty or on a cost-shared basis if the warranty had expired. I am now apprehensive about driving the vehicle, never knowing when the engine may fail, especially in the Outback.
THERE were problems with the GU Patrol when it was first launched, but Nissan claims to have fixed them by using a new dipstick and an increased oil fill. Any that failed were fixed by Nissan, as you say, and there are still occasionally reports about problems. But the Patrol is now probably at an age and mileage when those that were going to fail have, and they have been rebuilt. For more information, contact the Nissan Customer Assistance people.
