MY AU Series II Falcon XR8 220 auto had the same problem as Michael Frith's BA XR8 when it did the 3-1 downshift. The clunk would shake my false teeth loose. For two years I asked Ford to fix the problem before they finally contacted the gearbox maker who, after nine months of trying new software settings, fixed it. It now changes without a whimper. Keep the pressure on Ford.
GOOD advice, Tony. I hope Michael can get the same solution. We've heard from many owners of XR6 and XR8 Falcons with the same concern. I'm told it is a problem with the rear axle and there is no fix except maybe to alter the software to soften shifts. I am told Ford was changing rear axles if you complained, but has stopped doing that because it only deferred the problem.
