How does a stop-start function work?

In the stop-start function, what restarts the engine? The starter motor? Will it wear out sooner? How effective are these setups?

It's generally the starter motor. Some cars have an auxiliary starter inside the gearbox. There should be no effect on durability. Most companies report fuel savings of 2-8 per cent although I have seen better in a couple of cars in city running.
