Subaru Forester 2014: Can headlight protectors be used with xenons?

We are in the process of purchasing a Subaru Forester XT Premium and are getting conflicting advice on headlight protectors. We're told they cannot be fitted because the self-levelling xenon headlights generate too much heat. Please advise as we do not want to pay extra for something we cannot use.

It's not about heat from xenon beams, as Subaru spokesman David Rowley explains: "Headlight covers can create beam refraction, which is the white light breaking down like a rainbow. High Intensity Discharge headlights often have separate washers as dirt on the lens can also cause refraction."
