Ford Focus 2006: Air compressor failed too soon

When my daughter 2006 Ford Focus recently took her car in for a 40,000 km service she was told that the front brake rotors needed replacement and that the air-conditioning compressor was faulty and needed replacement. The total cost was in excess of $2,600! The car is a manual, which she drives conservatively and she has owned the car since new. In regard to the brake rotors she was told that Ford put hard disc pads on this vehicle and that is the reason for the premature rotor wear. I find this hard to believe, as 40,000 km is extremely low for rotor replacement especially being a manual vehicle. In regard to air-conditioning compressor she was told that the clutch winding was faulty. Can this be replaced without replacing whole compressor? Do you think we have any recourse to Ford given the low kilometres that the vehicle has travelled, even though it is out of warranty?

I don't think you could claim against Ford for the compressor, the car is now six years old. I would take it to an air-conditioning specialist and have them check the compressor to see if it can be repaired rather than replaced. Likewise the brake rotors, 40,000 km is not uncommon in a European car like the Focus. Again I would seek out a brake specialist and see if you can get some better aftermarket rotors to fit.
