Toyota Camry 2001: Vibrations when braking

I OWN a 2001 Toyota Camry V6 auto sedan with 38,000km on the clock. When I apply the brakes, I get this vibration through the car, and humming noise from the engine. Sometimes it seems it's carrying through to the exhaust, which really is annoying because otherwise the car is so quiet. I have taken it to several places, including two Toyota dealerships -- one saying it was my exhaust brackets and it's a standard thing, the other saying there is nothing wrong at all. I've also taken it to my mechanic, who has "taken the stress" off the drivetrain by loosening the engine mounting bolts, let the engine and transmission rest, then tightening the bolts again. But still not fixed. I got the car lowered recently and the vibration amplified somewhat -- now it's very much a constant thing.

LOWERING a car changes the geometry of the suspension, and the drive shafts, which may account for the amplification. A vibration will often travel through the car, causing other components to resonate. Go through the normal driving process that you know causes the vibration, and while you're doing it identify when it occurs, at what speed, whether slowing down, accelerating, brakes on, brakes off, coasting and so on. I'd check the brakes, looking for a sticking calliper, uneven pad wear, or foreign objects stuck in the disc. The things you mention seem to be focused on what's happening as a result of the vibration, not the cause of the vibration itself.
