Ask Smithy Xtra Rust around plates on Pathfinder

In July I noticed rust around the number plate light on the back door of my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. I mentioned it to the dealer who took it up with Nissan, but they rejected the claim. The Pathfinders are known to rust on the roof and rear door, and ours has had rust on the roof, which Nissan repaired. What should we do?

The warranty has run out so you’re really pushing uphill if you want to get Nissan to pay for the repairs. If the rust hasn’t penetrated the sheet metal I would apply some rust preventative and try and limit the damage over the long term.
