Any old fuel

I HAVE a 1997 Toyota Starlet auto that's done 115,000km. When I fill the car with unleaded petrol it pings really badly and when I use premium unleaded it does not make a noise at all. Is this normal or is something else a problem? I don't fill up at cheap petrol outlets so I don't think this could be the cause.

YOUR Starlet should run on regular unleaded without pinging, so I'd suspect crook fuel. Try different outlets using different brands, making sure you buy from a high-volume outlet so you're not buying old fuel.
