2026 Ramcharger 1500 'coming fast': CEO
By Samuel Irvine · 25 Feb 2025
Ram’s global CEO, Tim Kuniski, is so excited about the brand’s upcoming range-extender pick-up it is rushing to release it ahead of its fully-electric sibling. After it was announced in 2023, the Ramcharger 1500 will launch in the US in the second half of the year, with order books poised to open before the middle of 2025.The launch of the battery electric version will be pushed back to 2026 – the Ramcharger’s initial launch date.“I think this is really going to be a secret weapon in the industry,” an enthusiastic Kuniskis said, according to Motor1.“It's why we wanted to share it with you as soon as possible. It's not a PowerPoint slide. This thing is real, and it's coming fast."The Ramcharger 1500 uses a Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine generator to charge its 91.8kWh battery pack that in turn powers two electric motors that are solely for propulsion. In addition to a 102-litre petrol tank, the brand claims it will deliver a staggering 1100km of driving range once all battery and fuel capacity is exhausted.Power and torque are quoted at 482kW/827Nm, and despite it nearly weighing an almighty 3500kg, Ram claims it will still sprint from 0-60m/ph (0-98km/h) in just 4.5 seconds. To accommodate the much larger powertrain, Ram said it has widened its STLA Frame undercarriage by eight inches compared to a regular 1500.Three drive modes will be available: Electric+, E-Save and Eco. Electric+ will only use petrol power once the battery is fully depleted, which takes about 226km. Once that happens, the petrol engine will kick in to power the generator that powers the front and rear axle electric motors. The petrol motor generator can add some power to the battery if it dips below 50 per cent charge but cannot fully charge it.In E-Save mode, the engine will turn on and maintain the battery at its current state of charge while driving. It is designed for when electric-only operation is required later, such as entering an urban zero-emissions zone.Eco, meanwhile, takes the most energy conservative approach by reducing available horsepower and dialling down the amount of power spent on air conditioning. At no point will the petrol engine power the wheels – it only powers a built-in generator that powers the wheels. If at any point, however, you require the full range of power and torque, the engine and its petrol generator will be active.Pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, although Ram said it is aiming for parity with the new petrol 1500 in the US, which will be powered by the new V6 Hurricane engine. The new petrol 1500 hasn’t launched in Australia yet, so it is difficult to make an accurate estimation on pricing, although the previous V8 Hemi 1500 started at around the $120,000 mark.Ateco, Ram’s Australian distributor, has previously said it is exploring the Ramcharger for Australia. CarsGuide has contacted it for a further update. An update to the story will follow with a response.

Mercedes to offer price parity on new CLA
By Samuel Irvine · 21 Feb 2025
Mercedes-Benz has announced it will deliver price parity between its upcoming CLA sedan, which will be offered with the option of an electric or hybrid powertrain.Speaking to Autocar UK, Mercedes’ CEO, Ola Källenius, said 30 per cent cost savings in battery production meant a 15 per cent reduction in the electric version’s pricing, meaning it will have “roughly similar pricing” to the petrol-hybrid version. In Australia, Mercedes doesn’t currently offer a hybrid and electric car in the same vehicle class, making it difficult to speculate on any potential cost savings. The brand will reveal its new entry-level electric sedan, which is built on its new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) platform, in Europe by the middle of this year, with the hybrid version to follow later in the year.Four new models will be built on the MMA platform, including a saloon and shooting brake version of the CLA in both electric and hybrid powertrains, as well as expected replacements for the GLA/EQA and GLB/EQB.The German automotive icon is betting big on the MMA platform, which it hopes will account for a quarter of its sales once all its models have been launched, which is equivalent to roughly 600,000 units worldwide when factoring in last year’s global sales of roughly 2.4 million cars.It first previewed the MMA platform on the CLA concept car it unveiled at the Munich motor show in 2023, which is based on the 2022 Vision EQXX concept car that Mercedes drove from Sindelfingen to Cassis – a 1000km journey – on a single charge.Mercedes has already revealed the CLA will feature two battery pack options, a 58kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) unit, good for approximately 600km of range, while top-spec variants will get a more energy dense 85kWh silicon-oxide-anode unit that pushes 700km.800-volt charging architecture is expected, which Mercedes claims can add 400km of range in just 15 minutes on the concept version. It is unclear, however, whether variants with smaller LFP batteries will also benefit from the more advanced charging architecture.A compact Electric Drive Unit (EDU 2.0) will be the heart of the electric CLA, which is a derivative of the unit that powered the Vision EQXX concept. The EDU 2.0 will convert power from the battery to a 200kW electric motor mounted on the front axle via a two-speed transmission (similar to what is offered on a Porsche Taycan). A second 80kW motor will be fitted to the front axle on all-wheel drive versions.Mercedes is targeting an efficiency rating of 12kWh/100km, which would comfortably exceed the claimed peak ratings of a Tesla Model 3 (13.2kWh/100km) a BMW i4 (16.1kWh/100km), a Hyundai Ioniq 6 (14.3kWh/100km) and a BYD Seal (16.6kWh/100km).Powering the hybrid, on the other hand, will be a newly-developed 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, paired with a 1.3kWh battery unit, an electric motor, a 48-volt electrical system and an eight-speed electric dual-clutch transmission.Three power outputs are expected to be provided from the petrol engine, 100kW, 120kW and 140kW, not including the power from the electric motor.More information is expected following the next-generation CLA’s reveal later this year. It is poised to launch in Australia some time in the first half of next year.

BMW iX gets key upgrades for 2025
By Samuel Irvine · 20 Feb 2025
BMW has revealed pricing and details for its updated iX electric SUV ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms by the middle of this year.Just one variant – xDrive 45 M Sport – has been announced for now, which replaces the outgoing xDrive40 Sport as the base variant. It starts at $142,900, before on-road costs, a rise of $6000 on its predecessor. The price hike widens the gap even more over key rivals in the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV and Polestar 3, which start at $134,900 and $116,754, respectively, both at before on-road costs. In return for the price rise, however, it adds a suite of technical and luxury upgrades. Headlining those changes is a 30 per cent larger lithium-ion battery pack, which ups its size from 77kWh to 94.8kWh.For the first time in a BMW, the bigger battery also features silicon carbide semiconductor components, or SiC inverters, for more efficiency and heat resistance compared to conventional silicon semiconductors. The result is an extra 177km unlocked in driving range under the WLTP cycle, which sees total range rated at 602km, up from 425km on its predecessor. That means it now comfortably exceeds the claimed driving ranges of the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV (539km) and a Cadillac Lyriq (530km), but falls short of the Long Range Dual-Motor Polestar 3 (706km).Fast-charging capacity has also been upped to a maximum of 175kW, up 25kW from its predecessor, while home charging can be carried out at 22kW.BMW said fine-tuning and further development of the iX’s twin electric motors also boosts power and torque by 60kW and 30Nm, respectively. A full second has been shaved off the iX’s 0-100km/h sprint time, which is now just 5.1 seconds. In terms of design, the iX sports a new kidney grille with standard contour lighting and diagonally striped accents. The LED headlights and indicators have also been redesigned from horizontal to vertical, while adaptive and cornering light functions are now standard.Standard M Sport packaging adds sporty front air intakes and vertical reflectors at the rear.New metallic paint colours are also available at an additional cost, including Arctic Race Blue, Tanzanite Blue, Dune Grey and Frozen Deep Grey. Two additional colours – Frozen Pure Grey and Space Silver – will be added in Q4. There remains six non-metallic paint colours as no-cost options. In the cabin, a panoramic glass roof is now standard, while there are new M multi-function leather seats, a new M leather steering wheel with heating function, M pedals, anthracite headlining, Dark Silver trim finishes and a high-gloss finish on the centre console. A tyre pressure monitor is also now standard. As before, standard kit includes an 18-speaker Harman/Kardon surround sound system, heated and massage front seats, wireless phone charging, a 12.3-inch twin-screen panoramic display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 21-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels and a tyre repair kit.Customers can upgrade to Executive interior luxury packing for $6500, Integral Active Steering for $3000, Adaptive 2-axle air suspension for $4000 or a 30-speaker Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system for $9500.22-inch M alloy wheels are $2500 extra, while 23-inch ‘Individual’ aerodynamic wheels will set you back an additional $5000.More variants will follow the xDrive 45 M Sport to complete the iX line-up later in 2025.

BYD's next budget electric car for Australia?
By Samuel Irvine · 20 Feb 2025
A new ultra-efficient BYD model has been exposed by China’s vehicle regulator.Dubbed the Seal 08, the all-new electric model will arrive as a sibling to the Qin L EV in China, a cut-price sedan offered with internal combustion engine (ICE), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric powertrains. This model, however, will only be available with an electric powertrain. Specifically, a small 46.1kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade battery pack, paired with a 110kW electric motor.Despite its small size, the Sealion 08's 10kWh/100km efficiency means the sedan has an impressive 461km of driving range, albeit in the more lenient CLTC protocol. It also puts it comfortably ahead of the updated Tesla Model 3 (on paper), which achieves a peak rating of 13.2kWh/100km under the more stringent WLTP cycle. A top-spec variant will carry a larger 56.6kWh unit that will provide 545km, while it also gets a more powerful electric motor that delivers 160kW.In terms of design, the Seal 08 mirrors the Seal with its 'Ocean Series' silhouette, which includes the same front end, roofline and tailgate as the Seal. That said, it gets different LED headlight clusters, no fancy LED running lights on the lower bumper, physical door handles, less sophisticated wheel designs and different LED tail-lights.According to CarNewsChina, this is because it will fit under the Dynasty series in China, a more budget-friendly offering that the publication said is targeted at younger, cash-strapped buyers. The Ocean Series, which makes up most of the offerings on the Australian market, such as the Seal, Dolphin and Sealion 7, is alternatively targeted at a more upmarket clientele. As such, the Seal 08 is being floated with a price tag of around 150,000 yuan ($32,422) in China, although it would certainly carry a premium should it land in Australia.CarsGuide has contacted BYD’s local operations to determine whether the Seal 08 is a chance for the Australian market as a cut-price follow up to the brand’s more premium Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 competitor, the BYD Seal.It comes after CEO of BYD’s local distributor David Smitherman told CarsGuide he was pushing for more models in Australia."BYD has got a huge appetite for Australia and is very keen to bring product to the market," said Smitherman"In my role, I’m saying let's get lots of products to Australia to meet every segment."

Crucial details of XPeng G7 revealed
By Samuel Irvine · 19 Feb 2025
We now know the crucial powertrain details of the incoming XPeng G7, which is poised to land on Australian shores next year. The top-spec G7 will reportedly boast a range of 702km under the more lenient CLTC cycle when it lands in China in April, thanks to a 80.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack produced by China Aviation Lithium Batteries (CALB), according to CarNewsChina. An entry-level variant will carry a smaller 68.5kWh unit, with range dropping to 602km on the CLTC cycle. Both models will carry a single 218kW electric motor, with a more powerful dual-motor, all-wheel drive variant set to arrive later. In terms of dimensions, we already know the G7 will be 4892mm long, 1925mm wide and 1655mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2890mm. That puts it roughly on par with more luxe electric EVs, such as the Polestar 3, BMW iX and Mercedes EQE SUV, although it is unlikely to go anywhere near those models on price.Curb weight will sit at about 2085kg on the entry-level version thanks to a 560kg battery pack, which is considerably heavier than the incoming single-motor Rear Wheel Drive Tesla Model Y, which weighs 1921kg and carries a similarly-sized 62.5kWh battery. That said, the G7 is 100mm longer and 31 mm taller than the Model Y, but just 4mm wider.Despite the brand claiming to be the new “benchmark of luxury” on the EV market, its price will scream more budget-friendly, with CarNewsChina forecasting a price tag of 200,000 Yuan ($43,917).That would put its Australian price around the $55,000 mark, which is more in the realm of a BYD Sealion 7 or Kia EV5, although the G7 is larger than both of them.Further details remain scarce for now, with only exterior images and a few leaked interior shots keeping us occupied.Design wise, the G7 will bear some strong similarities to the incoming Model Y with its full bonnet-width LED light bar, sloping roofline, rear spoiler and flush door handles.Inside, we know the G7 will have a portrait-mounted central touchscreen, along with a smaller digital driver’s display, but that’s about it for now.Expect more information following the G7’s official launch date in China this April.
