Peter grew up in a house in Western Sydney where automotive passion extended to white Sigmas and Magnas. At school he discovered "those" magazines that weren't to be found in the house. Magazines that offered him the chance to sit in the driver's seat of cars he’d never even heard of let alone seen. His path to rebellion was set - he would love cars, know cars and want to write about cars, much to his family’s disgust. They wanted him to be a teacher. He bought a series of terrible cars and lusted after Ford Escort Cosworths, the Alfa Romeo 164 Q and occasionally kicked himself for selling his 1977 Alfa GTV. From 1.0-litre three cylinders to roaring V12s, Peter has driven them all and can't wait to tell you all about it.

I've probably said this before, but it bears repeating: I never thought in...Read more
A few weeks back, I warmly welcomed the heavily facelifted Lexus IS in the form of the IS300. It was, of course, lovely, but contained a couple of disappointments, chief among them the lack of finesse from the eight-speed transmission. At the other end of the range (for the moment) is this car, the...Read more
It's all new and big SUVs all the time at Hyundai. Well, and a small one. In the space of a few weeks, the Korean juggernaut has launched the giant Palisade, the updated Kona, and the newly (and early) updated Santa Fe. The Tucson is coming soon. The Santa Fe update is slightly curious as the all-...Read more
The Lexus IS sedan was, for many years, the backbone of the Lexus brand in Australia. Larger sedans came and went and the LS limo flew the uber-luxury flag, but it was the angular IS that really got people going. We're now in the fourth-generation IS . Except, really, Lexus has a pulled a Land...Read more
Hyundai Australia has had its eye on the giant Palisade for as long as it has existed. The Santa Fe has grown over the last decade but not to the extent it can swallow people and cargo the way some competitors can. And after a long wait - as well as the almost simultaneous launch of posh-brand...Read more
Long before it was cool to take the name of a sports car that was never officially released here and slap it on the rump of a compact SUV (Ford Puma, if you're wondering), Mitsubishi had already been there and done that with a car of its own, the Eclipse Cross. One imagines it was so named because...Read more
Tell you what's unexpectedly popular - videos about the Suzuki Vitara. In the space of two months in 2019, Nedahl and I reviewed Suzuki's updated reboot of the SUV that defined a genre almost thirty years ago, and both videos blasted past 100,000 views. I was mildly shocked because I'd misjudged...Read more
It seems like only yesterday the Seltos arrived in a blaze of acclaim, Kia's long-awaited compact SUV quickly capturing the imagination of buyers. The Seltos nailed a tricky formula, delivering style, space and a solid ownership proposition at an impressive price. During 2020 the Seltos scored a...Read more
The Volvo XC40 - the Chinese-owned Swedish car company's debut in the compact SUV segment - was a hit from the get-go. Stylish, refined, ever-so-cool, and yet not pricey enough to have to go up against the other Euro competition, it kept Volvo's contemporary image intact. A couple of years later,...Read more
Thumbing through Audi's RS sports car range is quite the roller-coaster. SUVs compact, medium and large; two- and five-door coupes; wagons - you're rather spoilt for choice. Chuck in the V10-powered R8 sports car and it becomes even more eclectic. If you can't find an RS car to fit your lifestyle...Read more
There is nothing quite like a car company occasionally building a car that could be considered a risk. And there are all kinds of risks in the car business - the market isn't ready for that car, people don't identify your brand with this or that type of vehicle, the list goes on. And it's long. It'...Read more
The last-gen Ford Escape was born with the cringey Kuga nameplate but neither badge set made it much of a hit. That was a bit of a shame, because it was a very appealing proposition and the closest thing to a performance SUV you were going to get from a mainstream car maker. The ST-Line was by far...Read more
It feels like I've been driving the current Nissan X-Trail for my entire car-reviewing career, which is getting on to eight years now. And a quick check of the release date for this third-generation X-Trail confirmed my suspicions - it's been almost seven years. That's a long, long time for a car...Read more
Twitter is full of people with bad opinions about everything and anything. Some people in the CarsGuide office say that this particular medium is perfect for me and laugh. I have no idea what that means. Some things are meant to stay a mystery, I suppose. Anyway, one of the bad opinions I see on...Read more
The Honda Civic's 10th generation is drawing to an end. Well, I say that, but there's still a pretty solid chance that the 11th generation won't quite be here this time next year. I make the point because we've already seen a "prototype" for series 11 of the Honda Civic Story , but also because we...Read more
You can almost trace Toyota's renaissance back to a single day – the day the C-HR was revealed to the world as a production car. The company could have gotten away with jacking up a Yaris and calling it a compact SUV, but instead they went all out with a bolt-from-the-blue looker with some really...Read more
