Senior Journalist

Laura Berry is a best-selling Australian author and journalist who has been reviewing cars for more than 15 years.

Much more of a Hot Wheels girl than a Matchbox one, she grew up in a family that would spend every Friday night sitting on a hill at the Speedway watching sprint cars slide in the mud. The best part of this was being given money to buy stickers. She loved stickers… which then turned into a love of tattoos.

Out of boredom, she learnt to drive at 14 on her parents’ bush property in what can only be described as a heavily modified Toyota LandCruiser.

At the age of 17 she was told she couldn’t have a V8 Holden ute by her mother, which led to Laura and her father laying in the driveway for three months building a six-cylinder ute with more horsepower than a V8.

Since then she’s only ever owned V8s, with a Ford Falcon XW and a Holden Monaro CV8 part of her collection over the years.

Laura began her career as a journalist in the entertainment industry writing about music for The South China Morning Post; television for tvChoice; fashion and celebrities for The Mirror before combining her passion for cars with her profession and moved into motoring.

In 2008 she joined News Custom Publishing as Managing Editor of its motoring titles, including Australia’s Best Cars and the official programs for V8 Supercars, Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

In 2011 she joined CarsGuide (for the first time), back when it was part of a newspaper, and learnt to test and review cars.

This followed a move to Motor as Production Editor, then Wheels as News Editor while also writing for Street Machine and Top Gear Australia.

As the media landscape shifted she left print journalism and joined online motoring publication GoAuto as a senior writer.

A brief stint in automotive public relations then followed before she joined CarsGuide in 2015 (for the second time) as Senior Journalist where she remains to this day.

A wife and mother, and author of two books, her current daily driver is a chopped 1951 Ford Tudor with a V8, of course.

BYD's tough new SUV a step closer to Oz
By Laura Berry · 20 May 2026
BYD’s big rival to the Toyota Prado is another step closer to Australia with the hybrid SUV hitting showrooms in the United Kingdom before the end of this year.A large, rugged, seven-seater SUV is one of the final pieces in BYD’s Australian plan and with the arrival of the Ti7 (or Titanium 7 as it’s also known) in fellow right-hand drive market the UK this year, plus BYD has trademarked the Ti7 name in Australia, we won’t be waiting too long it seems.UK models often give an accurate insight into what we can expect here ahead of their arrival and the Ti7 that’ll soon be on the streets of Britain shouldn't be much different to the one that will be here on the streets of Brisbane. What will definitely stay the same are the vehicle's dimensions. The UK spec vehicle is 5146mm long, 1995mm wide and 1865mm tall. Two electric motors - one positioned on the front axle and the other at the rear - provide all-wheel drive and are supported by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine.Quicker than any Toyota Prado ever the Ti7 can sprint from 0-100mm/h in a staggering 4.8 seconds.A 35.6kWh battery offers up to 127km of pure electric driving range. While the only variant arriving in the UK is expected to be a plug-in hybrid, a fully electric version of the Ti7 with flash charging is sold in China.Australia is likely to get the PHEV version, given the popularity of similar models such as the large BYD Sealion 8 SUV.The Sealion 8 is a large seven seat SUV with a very smiler PHEV powertrain and so it’ll be interesting to see if the Ti7 will arrive wearing a BYD badge or a Denza one.Denza models in Australia are sourced form its Denza premium range and Fangchengbao adventure brand in China. The Ti7 falls under the Fangchengbao brand in China, as do the B5 and B8 sold by Denza in Australia, but reports state BYD will claim the new rugged looking SUV for its own.A BYD spokesperson explained to UK outlet Autocar this was because the Ti7 doesn' share the B5 and B8's rugged ladder frame underpinnings. This means the Ti7 won't be suited to off-roading and will be a road focused family SUV with tough looks.Following this logic it's likely the Ti7 will wear a BYD badge in Australia, too.CarsGuide reached out to BYD Australia for confirmation of the model’s arrival and when we’ll see it here, but the brand has yet to respond.

Ford's new BYD baiting models announced
By Laura Berry · 19 May 2026
Ford has announced a plan it hopes will win back European buyers by launching five new “rally bred” small cars before the end of the decade. In an ambitious attempt to regain the large share of Europe’s market it once had, Ford is playing the performance card hoping its historic connections to motorsport and adventure will appeal to buyers.“Ford has more than a century of racing heritage particularly in the world of rally, Europe’s native racing format,” the announcement said. “Combining that off-road DNA with on-road performance, Ford will create rally-bred vehicles tailored to Europe.” The announcement launches a new campaign centred around the slogan 'Ready Set Ford' and promises to bring new models in areas that Ford believes are its strengths, those being 'Build, Thrill and Adventure', according to the brand. All this is happening as Chinese brands such as BYD flood the market with electric and plug-in hybrid cars.Ford’s announcement is high on slogans and promises it’s low on details, although five new models have been confirmed including a baby Bronco off-road SUV to be built in Spain in 2028.The baby Bronco will be a 'multi energy' model according to Ford’s statement, suggesting it will be offered in several variants, possibly hybrid and fully electric. Also revealed in Ford’s announcement was the coming of a new fully-electric small SUV described as having “rally bred design language and drive dynamics in an urban-friendly package”.Two more sporty multi-energy models will also be launched - so called 'rally-bred' SUVs or crossovers. These will join and complete Ford’s new European passenger car line-up by 2029.The new models could see the revival of the Fiesta and Focus nameplates. Both models were axed within the past five years as Ford redirected its energy to SUVs.Ford’s ambitious strategy is designed to combat the current threat from new rivals the company faces in Europe. Small affordable electric and hybrid cars from Chinese carmakers are rapidly growing in popularity and Ford has seen its share in the European market dwindle from about nine per cent to less than four per cent. Will Australia see any of these new Ford models? It’s possible given some will be produced in right-hand drive for the UK.Ford may also need to review its skeletal offering in Australia, given the local downturn in the off-road ute market that it relies on heavily for sales.

Legendary 4WD brand turns to China for help
By Laura Berry · 18 May 2026
Iconic off-road brand Jeep may have been thrown a lifeline to be rescued from its current struggles in the form of Chinese carmaker Dongfeng with which it will build future models.Jeep’s parent company Stellantis has signed a new agreement which will see the joint venture currently known as Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile (DPCA) produce two Peugeot models and two Jeeps. The A$1.7 billion agreement will not only allow Stellantis to be more competitive locally in China with the models made at Dongfeng Wuhan plant but will also see these models exported globally.Speaking at the Financial Times Future of the Car Summit last week Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa said the partnership with Dongfeng was part of the company’s new strategy for the future. "Stellantis has been growing this last year, creating a clear view of being attractive for long-term partnerships to many players," he said."We are attractive because we are strong in many regions, we are attractive because of our scale, and mostly because we have unbelievably strong brands, so our level of appeal is big."We understand that by working with a set of partners to build a roadmap of technological improvement, supply chain improvement and maybe capacity utilisation. These are really good topics to work together and create benefits."Stellantis already has an existing separate agreement with Dongfeng and has produced the Peugeot 4008 and 5008 in China. The new joint venture will see Dongfeng’s Concept 6 and Concept 8 both shown at the recent Beijing motor show underpin two new Peugeot models. As for the two Jeep models both are expected to be 'new energy' (plug-in) vehicles but the platforms underpinning them is currently unknown. Filosa is expected to reveal more on this at an investor conference this week in the United States.Dongfeng currently has a large array of off-road models in its portfolio from the Rich 7 dual cab ute to the hardcore MHero SUV. The company also displayed what it calls the "first new energy all terrain extreme off-road concept vehicle - the MHero M-Hunter" at the Beijing motor show. It’s a model which may fit Jeep’s go-anywhere ethos well if it was to be chosen as the basis for a new model.Production of the new Jeep and Peugeot models will begin at the Wuhan factory in 2027.It could be the shot in the arm Jeep and Peugeot needs both globally and in Australia.Year to date sales of Jeep vehicles in Australia have reached just 249, a 65 per cent drop over the same period in 2025.Peugeot’s performance locally has been somewhat better but still underwhelming with 320 units registered year to date representing a 32.3 per cent decline compared to 2025.Stellantis will be looking to the new joint venture to give what are well known brands the technological innovation needed to compete in an auto landscape which is appearing to swing to Chinese dominance.

Chery Tiggo 8 Ultimate Super Hybrid long-term | Part 3
By Laura Berry · 16 May 2026
Well this is strange. What started as a long term test with an SUV I didn’t want to like, turned out to be one of our favourite cars I’ve ever tested. Now it’s time for the Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid to go back leaving all of us in my family missing it already.Fuel for thoughtThere were lots of pleasant surprises when we began our long-term test of the Chery Tiggo 8 Ultimate more than three months ago, but probably the most impressive finding was the fuel efficiency.Until I met the Tiggo 8 plug-in hybrid my experience with PHEVs hadn’t been good. I found the batteries ran out of power quickly and fuel use went through the roof. They weren't a good combustion car, nor a good hybrid. Then we reached the end of the first month with the Tiggo 8 and it made it through without needing a tank refill and on closer inspection the trip computer said we’d travelled 869km. That was a record for my testing and I hadn’t even charged the Tiggo 8 regularly. While the official fuel economy is 1.3L/100km that month we measured 6.1L/100km. Imagine how far we could have gone on a tank if we’d charged it more often! The secret to the Tiggo 8 plug-in hybrid’s long-haul ability is a large 60L tank, a big 18.4kWh battery and a clever hybrid system that never lets the battery run completely flat while using the engine as a generator on the go.Alas we never managed to test how far we could go on a full tank and a regularly replenished battery, but perhaps that could be a challenge for you, dear reader, to accept? This month we did fewer miles - only 409km - and our fuel consumption was 6.9L/100km.Lounge roomTwo more surprises were the Chery Tiggo 8's spaciousness and comfort. While not an overly large SUV at just over 4.7m long the Tiggo 8 has seven seats with the third row folding flat to offer a decent sized boot - 117 litres with all three rows in place and 479L with the third row stowed. The second row offers great space for adults and big kids and there's plenty of room for the front passenger even with our bulky forward-facing child car seat directly behind.Cabin storage is outstanding, so too are amenities with items like USB ports and a second-row climate zone. Those leather upholstered seats are luxuriously comfortable, supportive, hard wearing and easy to clean, too. Premium bargainThe Chery Tiggo 8 Ultimate Super Hybrid is $49,990 drive-away and the standard equipment list is mountainous. Highlights over the past few months have been keyless entry, which doesn’t need the door handle to be touched to lock and unlock, the excellent Sony sound system, privacy glass in the rear, wireless phone charging, heated seats and a head-up display. The upholstery and trims feel high quality, while the styling of both the interior and exterior is high-end looking. The value, plus the premium look and feel, is outstanding. Drive modeFinally we’ve been impressed with how easy and comfortable the Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid is to drive. If you keep the battery charged, this SUV feels like an EV most of the time at lower speeds - smooth, quiet and with instant and strong acceleration when needed. And while this isn’t the most agile and sporty SUV, the suspension does a great job of keeping the vehicle composed and comfortable. Not all greatThe Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid isn't perfect. I’ve mentioned the handling not being sporty but the driving position feels way too high (even on the lowest setting) and this leads to partial vision obstruction from the sun visor and rear-vision mirror. Also, while I love column-mounted shifters, the Tiggo 8 requires the driver to simultaneously step hard on the brake pedal to shift from Drive to Reverse. Like really hard. Otherwise the vehicle shifts in neutral and rolls. That annoyed me.The lack of tactile buttons and controls is also frustrating to live with daily. Climate, volume, almost everything is done through the media screen and while that means the cabin looks clean and minimalist it's ergonomically bad. Acquired: December, 2025Distance travelled this month: 409kmOdometer: 8676kmAverage fuel consumption this month: 6.9L/100km (measured at the pump)

Jaguar's first new model locked in
By Laura Berry · 13 May 2026
Jaguar’s first car since the brand’s total reboot will be called Type 01, the British brand has confirmed ahead of the luxury GT’s debut at the Monaco E-Prix this weekend.Almost 18 months ago Jaguar declared it was wiping the slate clean and starting again with a completely new direction and models for what it called “the new era”.Since then we’ve seen a controversial ad campaign, a new Jaguar logo, design concepts of large swooping electric limousines, and a preview drive of its GT saloon prototype. It’s the GT saloon that will wear the Type 01 badge, which according to Jaguar: “references legendary predecessors, ‘0’ is for zero tailpipe emissions, ‘1’ for the first of a new generation”.The word 'Type' is a designation Jaguar has historically used on its vehicles and dates back to the 1951 Le Mans winning  C-Type racecar. Over the decades there’s also been the iconic E-Type and most recently the F-Type.“We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before,” said Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover “Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind!’” Jaguar said the Type 01 will make an appearance at the Monaco E-Prix on May 16, this weekend, albeit wrapped in a camouflage design.Earlier this year CarsGuide had the opportunity to meet and pilot the prototype of the Type 01. The imposing and sleak saloon meaures 5200mm long, just 1400mm tall and has a wheel base of 3200mm.We were told the prototype has a split battery that allows the cabin section to sit low while still retaining a large overall capacity of 120kWh for a range of up to 700km.Two motors at the front produce 706kW, while a smaller rear motor makes 260kW. Combined torque is 1300Nm.The Type 01 is expected to make its official and undisguised debut later this year.

Ultimate end-of-the-world ute incoming
By Laura Berry · 12 May 2026
Is your family prepped for the apocalypse, yet? If not then perhaps you need a Fortress - a military-inspired tactical ute built by United States custom car builder Rezvani. The Fortress is the latest model to be built by Rezvani. Only shadowy teaser images have been released ahead of its reveal in a month's time, but if the company’s previous models are anything to go by the this will be a very wild truck. From what we can see the Fortress is a large dual-cab pickup with futuristic styling, but unlike the Tesla Cybertruck it has what appears to be an open tray bed without a large canopy. As with all of Rezvani’s creations the vehicles use a base car for the foundations before being heavily modified. In the case of the Fortress, Rezvani may have used the Jeep Gladiator as it has with past models. From what we can see in the images, the Fortress features a high bonnet crowned with an enormous air intake scoop.Minimal LED lighting is seen in the form of a roof top light bar, small headlights and strip lighting across the grille’s top edge and at the rear minimalist taillights take the form of elongated vertically positioned arrows.Set to be revealed in June the Fortress is billed by Rezvani as the “ultimate tactical off-road truck” and is said to be available with a range of James Bond style enhancements including electrified door handles, smoke screen function and body panel armour. If you think that all sounds a bit over the top, you should check out Rezvani’s past models. There’s the Jeep Wrangler-based Tank which Rezvani calls an XUV or Xtreme Utility Vehicle which looks as though it's been pulled off a sci-fi movie set.The Tank which lists in the US for more than A$500,000 comes with some extreme options, too, including protection of electromagnetic pulse weapons. There’s also the Dark Knight SUV which is based on the Lamborghini Urus; or the Beast which uses the Corvette C8 sports car as a starting point; and then there's the Hercules which is a heavily customised Jeep Gladiator but with, wait for it… six-wheel drive. Will the Rezavni Fortress come to Australia? It’s unlikely that it would pass our strict Australia Design Rules, especially those with electrified door handles.

Legendary badge could return on new hatch
By Laura Berry · 11 May 2026
Hot on the heels of Volkswagen’s unveiling of its fully electric ID. Polo, the brand has hinted that a high-performance ‘Clubsport’ version of the little hatch is on the way, according to reports. The ID. Polo is Volkswagen’s first electric variant of the model and it has just arrived in Europe to rival the likes of the BYD Dolphin and MG4 with an entry price of about $41,000. The sporty GTI version is due to launch in Europe next year. Now according to British publication Autocar, Volkswagen is tinkering away on an even sportier ‘Clubsport’ variant. While at the preview drive of the ID. Polo GTI Volkswagen dynamics boss Florian Umbach hinted of what was to come."We are working on something," he told Autocar. "There is certainly more peak power that we can find from the motor and battery hardware that we have and more torque that the front axle could handle also. There is clear potential.” Umbach also revealed that Volkswagen was working on a paddle shift style ‘gear-change’ system for the vehicle similar to what Hyundai uses on the Ioniq 5 N.“This is simply a software thing,” he explained. “It’s all about motor control and an audio soundtrack to match.” There is a catch, however. And that, according to Umbach, is the success of the GTI. If that proves popular then his other ‘dream’ projects like Clubsport have a chance of getting the green light.“These are the kinds of things that the executive board will only let us explore if the GTI is a commercial success, of course. If people respond to this car as it is, we can really take it to the next level.”The ID. Polo has yet to be confirmed for Australia with the local arm saying that neither availability nor timing for the arrival of the hatch were certain. The ID. Polo is shorter in length than its petrol cousin at 4053mm, but wider at 1816mm and taller at 1530mm.Powering the ID. Polo is a choice of three motors making 85kW, 99kW and 155kW, while the GTI version will produce 166kW.Two batteries are offered - a 37kWh with 329km of range and a 52kWh battery will offer up to 454km.Volkswagen has a growing range of electric models in its Australian line-up which includes the ID. Buzz people mover, ID. Cargo van and Transporter, along with the ID. 4 and ID.5 SUVs.

Why BYD could topple Toyota
By Laura Berry · 08 May 2026
Chinese carmaker BYD is making history as it rockets its way up the Australian sales charts that could see it finish in second place by the end of the year.Year-to-date BYD has sold 25,243 vehicles in Australia. Perennial top five seller Hyundai has recorded 25,103 so far, while Ford, the second-best selling brand in Australia last year, has managed 25,920.What’s so impressive is not just how many cars BYD selling, but the speed of its conquest of our market. This time last year BYD had sold 11,974 cars and somehow in the space of a year the brand has pushed past nearly every other carmaker in the country and looks to be headed to finishing second in 2026.The brands that still stand in BYD’s way are Kia with (27,080 cars sold so far in 2026), Mazda (27,526) and of course Toyota (59,675).Toyota is like the final big boss of the Aussie car game and BYD is one hundred per cent not going to beat it this year or possibly ever. It would be fun to entertain the idea that BYD could beat Toyota at some point in the future, but the only way that could happen is if Toyota tripped so badly in the sales race it couldn’t get back up again. We have seen huge brands rise and fall. Holden was once Australia’s top selling brand and today… well, it doesn’t exist. So Toyota’s is a lock for top spot this year, and the reality of BYD taking the silver medal is a very real possibility. That would send shock waves through the industry and mark the end of time for established brands such as Ford, which relies almost entirely on one model — the Ranger ute — to keep it on top.Ford would be anxious and brands such as Mazda, Kia and Hyundai would be feeling the heat, too.   Monthly sales for BYD show just how quickly the brand is striding ahead. In April BYD sold 7702 cars in Australia. Kia sold 6450, Hyundai 6002, Ford 5748 and Mazda 5636.Toyota, by the way, sold 15,185 cars in April. Are we living in unusual times? Interesting times, but not unusual. It seems that every 10 to 15 years a new big force arrives. Kia and Hyundai were the previous big force. Now it’s the Chinese brands' turn, and they're currently elbowing each other out the way to get to the front while the old guard scratches its head wondering what just happened. The catalyst for change has been the switch to electric cars and with Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Nissan and Mitsubishi hardly having an EV between them, Chinese brands have swooped in to offer what people want.BYD, Chery, MG, GWM, Geely and Zeekr are offering outstanding and affordable electric cars and hybrids from hatches and sedans to SUVs and utes.MG and GWM were first on the scene, and both have become a part of Australia’s automotive landscape.BYD has won over Aussies even quicker.Four years ago almost nobody in Australia had heard of BYD, or Build Your Dreams as it was known then. As motoring journalists we were aware of the new brand from China, but hardly saw it as an immediate threat to the likes of MG, which had already won over Aussies with models such as the MG ZS. Nope, in 2022 BYD appeared to be just another Chinese brand hoping to ride the wave of interest in EVs that had taken off in Australia. The popularity of BYD models such as the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute, Atto 3 small electric SUV and Sealion 7 electric SUV have been central to the brand’s success. Crucial to the brand’s continued rise is bolstering its line-up with a multitude of other models, such as the Atto 1 electric hatchback, Atto 2 electric small SUV, Sealion 5 compact plug-in hybrid SUV, Sealion 6 mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV and Sealion 8 seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV.BYD could just make it to second spot this year, but how long it can stay there is another story. Hyundai or Kia could make a comeback, but what is looking even more likely is a challenge from a fellow Chinese brand such as Chery. Chery only has five models but sold 4322 cars in April, and this year it will launch its diesel hybrid ute to rival the BYD Shark 6 and that could add an extra 1000 sales a month. Then again the ute market appears to be headed into troubled waters - again, another story for another day.For now it’s BYD time in the sun and while that might not mean being number one, number two would do.
