What will you buy in 2020?

Fast forward. The year is 2020. The last Falcon left the production line over four years ago and it was joined by the last Commodore not long after. Toyota's local operation has also been looking pretty shaky, because the departure of Ford and Holden from the production scene has driven up the cost of parts. Toyota is hanging on, thanks to the extra exports it picked up from Holden - but by the skin of its teeth.No more Falcons or Commodores of course means no more utes either, V8 or otherwise - what's a buyer supposed to do? It's time for a reality check. The missus isn't happy because the beaut VF you bought six years ago has been playing up and will need updating sooner than later (tomorrow if the ball and chain has her way).The question is: what to buy? A hybrid or an electric vehicle maybe or perhaps one of those new-fangled hydrogen jobs - they're supposed to be pretty good on gas? At this point in time, the figures suggest your next car will probably be a Corolla or a Mazda3, because as much as we profess to love them buyers have been deserting the big family six for years while sales of smaller cars and SUVs have continued to rise. That's on paper.But can you really see some big boofy bloke stepping out of an XR6 or V8-powered SS Commodore into one of these econo-boxes? The clock is ticking and it is time to choose. The top 5 selling vehicles in Australia as we speak are: the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Hyundai i30, Toyota Hilux and the Holden Cruze in that order. Forced to choose which one what would you buy if you had to for out for a new set of wheels tomorrow? Will it be one of these vehicles or perhaps a WRX, an EVO or something else with a bit of street cred?

Toyota reveals new taxi

Anyone that has caught a cab in Tokyo will not forget the experience in a hurry. The cabs come in the shape of throwback Toyota and Nissan models like the Crown and Cedric that have their origins in another era. They're cars designed and built more than 20 years ago but still manufactured today because they fill a specific need. Their popularity extends to other parts of South East Asia where they are also used as taxis but it looks like the Crown's run could finally be coming to an end, with the launch this week of an all new car designed especially for the role. Toyota's new take on the Tokyo taxi is a modern, hi-tech model powered by a fuel saving LPG based hybrid system, with gas and electric motors. The boxy upright design of the JPN Taxi Concept bears more than a passing resemblance to the London cab. It targets ease of entry and exit and a comfortable interior with a size that will deliver outstanding manoeuvrability in Tokyo's crowded city streets. It employs a new, economical liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) hybrid system with excellent environmental performance that has been optimised for taxi driving patterns. The design features familiar taxi proportions, with an electrically operated sliding door on the passenger-seat side. The display panel and lamps were selected with visibility and safety in mind. The interior design conveys hospitality, placing priority on universal design principles and modern expression. A large monitor provides information to passengers, such as the route to the destination and taxi fares. Air conditioning and lighting have also been optimised to provide the most comfortable space possible. For the driver, there are specially designed instruments and gauges for taxi use. The vehicle has been created in line with the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's promotion of barrier-free buses and taxis tailored to regional needs. Lexus RC Coupe here in a year

One of the more stylish cars to make an entrance at this year's Tokyo motor show was the glamorous new Lexus RC Coupe. Although based on the GS platform, the RC Coupe is a stand-alone model -- rather than a two-door derivative -- and differs in all dimensions to both the IS and GS lines.And the two-door is just about a year away from our showrooms. Lexus says the RC Coupe is production ready and will go sale in overseas markets towards the end of 2014, and we will get the car very close to its Japanese release.DESIGNIt's a real work of art. The emotionally charged RC boasts the widest and lowest application yet of the signature Lexus spindle grille. Sitting 30mm wider, 35mm lower and 70mm shorter in wheelbase than the new IS line, it has a more aggressive stance. The unique headlamp design adopts the symbolic Lexus L-shaped motif front and rear, while the car rides on 18 or 19 inch wheels.INTERIORA highlight of the interior is the specially designed back lighting which shines up rather than down. Genuine layered Shimamoku wood highlights are used to emphasise the surrounding trim while the driver’s cockpit is divided into operational and display zones. The upper zone houses the instrument panel and a seven-inch navigation screen while a layered centre console integrates a new Lexus first Remote Touch Interface. The form fitting seats created using a new foam process have been designed to ensure optimum occupant comfort and support.TECHNOLOGYThe RC coupe is powered by the same drivetrain choices as the IS sedan: either a 2.5-litre hybrid or 3.5 litre V6 -- the latter with an eight-speed Sports Direct Shift transmission (with steering wheel paddles) adapted from the IS F and optimising power delivery and economy. The power output per litre of the RC is second only to the $700,00 LFA supercar -- the dual injection 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine produces 234kW of power at 6400 revs and 380Nm of torque from 4800 revs.The hybrid combines a dual-injected 2.5-litre four cylinder engine with a 105kW electric motor for a combined output of 161kW and 221Nm, with drive to the rear wheels through a six-step CVT style transmission.To go with its racy good looks the sound generated by the engine has been tuned to ensure it delivers a more stirring note. Advanced technology includes upgraded Blind Spot Monitor and a new innovative Remote Touch Interface, which controls the audio and navigation systems. The RC is the first Lexus to adopt the upgraded Blind Spot Monitor system which detects vehicles that are approaching from behind at a higher speed and from a greater distance.UNDERPINNINGSRC uses double wishbone front suspension and multi-link suspension at the rear. Lighter and stronger the purpose-built chassis is designed to provide a world class driving experience, as epitomised by improvements in both the GS and IS lines. Extra thick underbody rocker panels increase the car's rigidity and new manufacturing techniques pioneered in the IS and LS models, including the use of body adhesives - have been used to strengthen the chassis. Nissan IDx Nismo and Freeflow star cars

This year's Tokyo motor show included some real gems but nothing that comes close to Nissan's IDx concepts. The IDx Nismo and IDx Freeflow get our award for the most magnetic exhibit at the 43rd annual show, a pair of cars that drew people like bees to honey -- proof positive that the design experiment was worthwhile. We watched as people stopped and looked and wondered, as their eyes travelled over the enticing, almost retro lines of the cars with roots in the muscle car phenomenon as well as links to some classics from Nissan's glory box like the esteemed Datsun 1600. Perhaps it's because these particular cars weren't just the work of designers, but were produced with input from the public, especially young people with whom the company is trying to reconnect - the Gen Ys or digital natives or whatever the bloody hell you call them. It's a brave step and one that might just pay off, if Nissan has the fortitude to build the cars and the natives come running to buy them - build it and they will come we can hear Kevin Costner saying. You see the data shows that young people are more interested in internet access than they are in getting their licence and buying a car like mum and dad these days - once regarded as a rite of passage. From the point of view of the car makers, it's a disaster waiting to happen. But Nissan at least has decided to try something different, or we might suggest to get back to basics and build the kind of cars that people aspire to buy - good looking things that fill an emotional need not just a practical one. The IDx Nismo and Freeflow, are two models cast from the same mold, designed to meet the needs of younger customers in a process that Nissan describes as co-creation - in effect cars designed by young people for young people. The name IDx is taken from the acronym for "identification" while the "x" part represents new values and dreams born through communication. Nissan says engaging with members of the digital generation in the design process created an opportunity to learn a slew of new insights and creative possibilities. It says the co-creation dialogue reached far and wide, from the basic framework right through to the finishing touches. Two versions of the car were created, one relaxed and casual, the other more overt and aggressive - because they are the result of two different conversations with two separate co-creation communities. What Nissan said it derived from this communication was a desire for a basic, authentic configuration. That is, a car without influences, based on the ideal proportions and straight stance of a timeless three-box design. Both the interior and exterior share the same simple design strategy, with just the right number of functions and accessories to give the cars a sense of solid reliability. The simple round steering wheel, contrasts with a large analog clock, prominently displayed above the central function monitors, with faded denim selected for the seat trim. The "floating roof" accentuates the simple box design of the body, painted as it is in a combination of white and flax brown, with stylish 18-inch chrome wheels. Believe it or not the cars are rear wheel drive too, just like the 'real' thing. It all sounds a little too good to be true, until you get to the mechanicals that is. Nissan reckons the quest for authenticity can be interpreted as a demand for economy and efficiency which just happens to take the form of an of-the-shelf 1.2 or 1.5-litre four cylinder petrol engine - or in the case of the racier Nismo its new 1.6-litre turbo. Where did that come from? Sorry but there's nothing in the slightest authentic about that. If you're going to do it, then do it properly - don't do a half baked job.
