New Hyundai Tucson breaks cover

Hyundai has thrown the covers off of its highly-anticipated next-generation Tucson in South Korea, although further local details on the key RAV4 rival are yet to be confirmed. The new model adopts a more radical design language than the outgoing car, with new angular ‘H-shape’ light fittings similar to the incoming i30 Sedan, which was revealed several months ago. Both cars feature the brand’s latest ‘Art of Steel’ design language. The side profile shows a boxy and upright design, moving the Tucson more towards a resurgent off-road trend, with strongly contoured bodywork protruding over the rear wheels while the rear light fittings also consist of strip-style H-shape LEDs.Inside, the Tucson gets a complete overhaul, syncing the model up with the more high-end feel of other recent models like the Palisade large SUV, using a deeper ‘three dimensional’ design theme. It scores a new steering wheel, small digital instrument cluster, large central multimedia touchscreen running the brand’s latest software suite, as well as extensive padded surfaces and ambient interior lighting across the dash. The centre console features an extended asymmetrical armrest piece, with two large bottle holders and space for a wireless phone charger, while a limited array of physical controls appear attached to the base of the central screen.A stalk-mounted shifter also helps to free the console area from controls. The brand also showed two separate models, a standard Tucson and XRT version, which gets a revised grille.Unlike some other models in the Korean brand’s line-up the XRT looks to be available from launch and will feature an array of exclusive trim pieces to enhance its “outdoor sensibilities”.The Korean market at least will have access to a new array of colours including white, grey in matte or metallic, orange matte and copper pearl.Meanwhile the interior will be available in black, grey two-tone, black and beige two tone and a black and brown two-tone.The new fifth-generation Tucson has expanded in dimensions, now 4700mm long, 1905mm wide and 1685mm tall, with the wheelbase expanded by 30mm and total width expanding by 40mm for what Hyundai claims is “best-in-class” interior space. While no further information about the key new mid-size SUV was offered, it is expected to follow in the footsteps of other recent Hyundai models. This means by the time it gets to Australia, it will be offered only as a hybrid, using a familiar 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and gearbox-mounted electric motor, as is used by the larger Santa Fe.The fifth-generation Tucson is due in Australia in 2027, with its official global debut slated to happen in America before the end of this year. The current Tucson has been a strong-seller for Hyundai, and currently ranks in second place amongst combustion and hybrid mid-size SUVs amassing 12,724 units so far this year. It remains behind the dominant Toyota RAV4 (21,115 units), but ahead of the Mitsubishi Outlander (12,189 units), Mazda CX-5 (12,378 units), and the related Kia Sportage (11,187 units). The mid-size SUV segment is in a state of flux, however, as electric options begin to storm the charts. The Tucson is being outranked, for example, by BYD’s Sealion 7 (15,064 units), and the best-selling Tesla Model Y (25,040 units).Hyundai’s fully electric Tucson alternative, the Elexio, made its debut on the charts last month with a respectable 692 units for July, although the brands march toward electric and hybrid only will need to continue if it plans to evade fines under the Australian Government’s new vehicle efficiency standards (NVES).Expect to learn more about the fifth-generation Tucson closer to its 2027 arrival in Australia.

Overnight reports out of Japan are pointing to a new-generation Mazda CX-30 arriving in 2030, which would make the current, first-generation model 11 years old on replacement.According to Chugoku Shimbun Mazda plans to launch the new CX-30 by fiscal year 2030 (the Japanese financial year runs from April 1 to March 31 the following year) with the aim of retaining its position as the brand’s second best-selling model globally, behind the CX-5.Introduced in Europe in late 2019 and arriving in Australia early the following year, the Mazda 3-based compact CX-30 was developed to fill the gap between the small CX-3 and medium CX-5 in Mazda’s now extensive SUV line-up.Mazda President and CEO Katsuhiro Moro told the Hiroshima-based outlet the company is aiming to strengthen the CX-30’s product appeal, noting that to reduce costs “we will incorporate the methods used in the new CX-5 into the next-generation CX-30".In 2025, Mazda sold just over 200,000 examples of the CX-30 worldwide, putting it in a clear second spot behind the CX-5 at around 350,000 units. It’s worth noting Mazda’s Chief Financial Officer Jeff Guyton told CarsGuide at the 2025 Tokyo motor show the brand’s next-generation “smaller architecture cars” were the next priority after the brand finishes its hybrid development.By 2027 Mazda plans to add its next-generation ‘Skyactiv-Z’ internal combustion engine and proprietary hybrid system to the recently renewed CX-5, with two more hybrid models set to follow soon after.Currently produced in Mazda’s main Ujina plant in Hiroshima City, the CX-30 is also produced in Hofu City, as well as in Mexico, Thailand and China with CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly in Malaysia and Indonesia.Early Australian CX-30 production came out of Thailand but local examples have been Japan-built since mid-2020 and it’s likely the new model, with a likely hybrid powertrain option, will follow suit.

Zeekr has shared details of its upcoming 7GT wagon ahead of its Australian arrival.Due before the end of 2026, the 7GT will be the brand’s next model following on from the success of the 7X mid-size SUV, and the brand has now confirmed it will bring the same three core trim levels available in China across to our market. This means the 7GT will be available in both standard and long-range versions, as well as a top-spec Performance all-wheel drive. The brand also hinted at an as-yet unknown fourth variant, which was said to be some kind of special edition. The 7GT has already been specified in Europe, where it is available in a base 75kWh Core RWD version with 310kW/440Nm. It can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds and travel 519km according to WLTP measuring standards. Next is a mid-spec 100kWh Long Range RWD version with the same power outputs and 0-100km/h sprint time despite its larger battery. Its range is boosted to 655km (WLTP).The top-spec Privilege AWD adds a second motor on the front axle, producing a combined output of 475kW/710Nm. It reduces the 0-100km/h sprint time to just 3.3 seconds, but also reduces driving range to 558km (WLTP).If the 7GT’s local price-tags remain relative to the cost of the 7X SUV in China, it will be a keenly-priced option locally. In China, the 7GT is priced lower than the 7X, with a conversion suggesting a starting figure of around $55,000, especially since the entry-level rear-wheel drive version is now confirmed. Expect the top-spec all-wheel drive version to top-out closer to $70,000.While specifications for right-hand drive Australian market cars are yet to be revealed, over in Europe the base car comes with the large 15.0-inch multimedia touchscreen and 13.0-inch digital dash, as well as built-in navigation and even panoramic sunroof. The mid-grade Long Range adds things like a 35.5-inch head-up display, while the top-spec Privilege AWD grade also adds active air suspension with adaptive dampers.Overseas, all three core 7GT variants are also available optionally with a range of interior packages, ranging from suede sports seats through to up-sized performance brakes designed to extend performance usage beyond what would otherwise be possible in cars with such heavy batteries. All versions of the 7GT are also equipped with an 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing a 10-80 per cent charge time between 13 and 16 minutes. All cars are also equipped with 3.3kW vehicle-to-load discharging and 22kW AC charging according to Euro specs.Inside, Euro spec cars get a choice of textile black, or Nappa leather interior trim in either charcoal or white. Chinese cars meanwhile are available with a wider array of interior trims including synthetic suede. The 7GT’s wagon body allows it a 456-litre boot capacity, while the frunk is 65-litres in rear-wheel drive variants or 32 litres in all-wheel drive variants. In Europe, the wagon is permitted to tow 1600kg, although whether this will carry over into the Australian market where regulations tend to be slightly different, remains to be seen. The 7GT was also recently awarded a maximum five-star EuroNCAP safety rating (which is expected to form the basis of a maximum five-star ANCAP rating). The sporty wagon will be Zeekr’s next launch in Australia, with the highly-anticipated 8X large SUV and 9X flagship due over the course of 2027, both of which will introduce plug-in hybrid power to the Chinese premium automaker’s line-up.

GAC has revealed a new and more affordable variant of its Emzoom small SUV.The brand announced the new entry-level Emzoom Premium is available from just $22,990, drive-away, undercutting the Tiggo 4 Urban ($23,990) and Haval Jolion Premium ($26,990), whilst also being the same price as the MG ZS Vibe ($22,990), all prices drive-away.The new variant is $3000 more affordable than the now-top-spec Emzoom Luxury, which continues to be priced at $26,990, drive-away.Unlike the Tiggo 4, Jolion and MG ZS however, all of which have pricier but desirable hybrid variants, the Emzoom is only available with combustion power. This consists of a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine for both trim levels. It produces 125kW/270Nm and is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The new base Premium grade forgoes the Luxury grade’s opening panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, 360-degree parking camera and blind spot view system, downgrades the number of parking sensors and downsizes the 18-inch wheels to 17s.It also loses the Luxury grade’s auto-folding wing mirrors, electric rear door handles, ambient interior lighting, ventilation and power adjust for the driver’s seat, the centre armrest and USB port for rear passengers and even the pre-tensioners for the seat belts. However, GAC points out the Emzoom maintains its large 14.6-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside the main suite of active safety items, as well as being available with a competitive seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.GAC says the new Premium variant will hit dealerships in September.A relatively new challenger to the segment-dominating Chery Tiggo 4, the Emzoom is also currently GAC’s best-selling car, ahead of the Aion V electric mid-sizer, however it plays in one of the most congested parts of the Australian new car market.GAC also offers the budget-focused Aion UT electric hatch (from $31,990) which competes in the entry part of the electric market alongside the BYD Dolphin and just-launched Geely EX2.While it is still in its infancy in Australia, GAC has a long way to go to challenge its more successful contemporaries, with Geely in particular surging ahead in the sales charts. However, it has managed to already surpass Leapmotor which, by comparison, has struggled for traction against a crowd of new brands.GAC has promised a larger hybrid SUV will arrive in 2027, and a ute is also high on its list of priorities as it boldly aims for a top-10 position in our market by 2028.

Hyundai began production of its newest electric car, the Ioniq 3, at its Türkiye plant during the week, with a promising price tag already attached to the car in the UK.Order books opened for the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 3 in the UK with a starting price of £22,245, which directly converts to A$42,400.While that’s not confirmation we can expect the Ioniq 3’s price to land around $40,000 on arrival in Australia, it does show Hyundai might be able to compete with small electric SUVs from China.Hyundai already sells a 'Light' SUV, the Inster, at around the $40,000 mark, so expect the bigger Ioniq 3 (which comes in at 4155mm long, 1800mm wide and 1505mm tall) to sit above that. While the Hyundai Ioniq 3 likely won’t be able to undercut small electric SUVs (which it’s smaller than) like the BYD Atto 2 (from $31,990), GWM Ora 5 (from $33,990) or Jaecoo J5 (from $36,990), Hyundai’s positioning as a more premium offering should help it entice buyers away. While it’s not set to launch here until the first half of 2027, the Ioniq 3 is also being built in Hyundai’s Türkiye factory, so importing the car from Europe will bring its own costs. However, Hyundai will be keen to make the car as competitive as possible through pricing or spec to bolster its electric car sales.Five variants of the Ioniq 3 have been confirmed for the UK with two battery-size and drivetrain set-ups.The version with a “projected WLTP range” of 344km thanks to a 42.2kWh battery and 108kW output is dubbed Standard Range, while a Long Range version with an anticipated range of 496km but lower output of 100kW is also locked in.The former is only available in the base model and brings the aforementioned £22,245 price with it, while the other drivetrain is available in the base trim as well as three higher grades. An N Line Evo variant tops the line-up at £31,945 (A$60,900).

Twelve months after the local market introduction of its Terramar mid-size SUV, Cupra has added two new limited Tribe Edition versions to the five-seater’s flagship VZ grade.Offered in two “carefully curated” design themes, underpinned by green or black, just 10 examples of the Terramar VZ Tribe Edition Green will be available with 35 VZ Tribe Edition Blacks on offer, both focused on sustainability through the use of repurposed materials.Computerised 3D knitting technology has produced the car’s seat upholstery, “100 percent recycled materials” are used in the seat centres and around 30 per cent of interior plastics incorporate recycled material.Even the Sulfur Green paint applied to multiple internal elements is claimed to be a ‘bio-based’ formulation and the alloy wheels consist of up to 20 per cent recycled material. The Tribe Editions are based on the top-spec Terramar VZ, which means they’re powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine sending 195kW/400Nm to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and part-time all-wheel drive system. Adaptive damper suspension is also onboard.Car-spotters should look out for an exclusive Manganese Matte Green finish, dark chrome exterior detailing and unique 20-inch alloy rims (incorporating Sulfur Green highlights) on the Terramar VZ Tribe Edition Green. The VZ Tribe Edition Black is finished in Midnight Black with black 20-inch ‘Gravity’ alloy wheels fitted.Interior highlights on both versions include the 3D knitted fabric seats and sulfur green and dark chrome interior highlights. The standard features list for these limited editions has also been upgraded to include the normally optional panoramic sunroof.Introducing the cars, Cupra Australia Head of Product Jeff Shafer said, “These editions combine the performance and dynamic capability of the Terramar VZ with carefully curated design elements that allow customers to express even more individuality. “Every detail has been selected to create a vehicle that feels unique while remaining unmistakably Cupra,” he said. The Cupra Terramar VZ Tribe Editions are available to order now with customer deliveries scheduled to begin this October.

A new game-changing hybrid engine is coming. The D20 Methanol is a range-extender engine made by global automotive engineering firm Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault and Geely. Horse makes a range of engines, electric motors and transmissions for Renault Group, Geely, Volvo, Proton, Nissan and Mitsubishi. Its latest engine burns 100 per cent methanol fuel, opposed to ethanol alternatives in current mainstream petrol engines. The engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit that produces 105kW (weighing 170kg) to charge the battery. Its sole purpose is to power the battery, with a lightweight electric motor responsible for driving the wheels. The disk-shaped electric motor lies flat, meaning it is 46 per cent shorter than vertically-mounted alternatives. It is said to have 63 per cent better power density, but Horse has not revealed the engine's total power output yet.Horse claims a 40kWh battery can be recharged using less than 20L of methanol fuel, making it one of the most efficient electrified set-ups on the market. The set-up generates 1kWh of electricity for every 2.1kWh of methanol burned, and can perform cold starts in temperatures as low as -35-degrees. The engine also has less emissions output. It complies with the European Union’s Euro 7 standard, which will become the benchmark later this year. What will the D20 Methanol engine be used in? It is unclear what this new engine will be used for, with Horse remaining coy on which of its carmaker clients will receive it. Range-extenders have become increasingly popular in China, especially in large SUVs, and the D20 could be the latest example of this. Geely might be looking to gain an advantage over other range-extender competition, the Leapmotor D19 and Volkswagen ID. Era 9X.China produces the majority of the world’s production of methanol, and is now heavily investing in renewable ethanol as opposed to coal-based.A low-emissions methanol-fueled car could be ahead of the curve in China for Geely. There is potential for models featuring this new range-extender set-up to come to Australia in the coming years, but nothing is confirmed at this stage.

Mazda’s slow roll out of its long-awaited hybrid technology is hurting its CX-5 sales, according to reports. The Japanese giant launched the CX-5, its biggest selling model in two of its largest markets - the US and Australia, this year.Sales have not lived up to the hype so far, with the SUV launching with just petrol power and the hybrid alternative not arriving until late 2027 in the US and likely 2028 in Australia. In the US, sales of the CX-5 have dipped 23 per cent since the model went on sale, according to Nikkei Asia.Mazda US is blaming insufficient stock for the sales blip, but sales of the similar-sized hybrid CX-50 — which uses Toyota's hybrid tech — have skyrocketed during the same period, according to reports.July was the first full month of sales of the new CX-5 in Australia, with sales flat compared to the same month in 2025.This might also be the result of stock not flowing freely just yet, but buyers could also be running to snatch up hybrid and plug-in hybrid alternatives.Sales of hybrid SUVs are up about 13 per cent this year, and plug-in hybrids have jumped almost 200 per cent.Petrol SUV registrations have shed a quarter of sales compared to 2025… read into that what you will.Mazda has always been open about the timing of its new hybrid technology and decided against installing someone else’s petrol-electric set-up in favour of developing its own in-house unit for the CX-5.At the 2025 Tokyo motor show, Mazda’s Managing Executive Officer in charge of Vehicle Development, Product Development, Design and Cost Innovation Naohito Saga said there were no technical issues developing the new hybrid tech but the delay was due to regulatory reasons both within Mazda and global markets.“We need a certain period of development timing, that is why,” said Saga through a translator.“Basically CX-5 will be introduced in Europe and US, so those stringent regulations we need to comply with."Mazda is also aiming to make the new CX-5 Hybrid sweeter to drive than any Toyota.“ Different characteristics . Because what we aim for is the Mazda driving feeling, which is the good feeling when you drive. That is what we are aiming for, so it will be different,” said Saga. When the hybrid does arrive it should be the pick of the litter, with performance to surpass the now defunct turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engine of the previous generation.Mazda Australia won’t just offer the hybrid in the priciest versions, but will have a broad offering across its grades, according to local boss Vinesh Bhindi.

Ford has launched its first high-performance Mustang convertible in more than a decade and the most powerful convertible Mustang ever with the introduction of the Dark Horse SC Convertible.Developed by Ford Racing, the new drop-top is powered by the same 593kW (795hp)/895Nm 5.2-litre supercharged ‘Predator’ V8 as its coupe stablemate. It sends its substantial grunt to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and is good for 0-100km/h in 3.3 seconds. Now that’s wind in your hair.Introducing the car Ford Racing Global Director Mark Rushbrook confirmed a subtle shift in the newcomer’s personality.“If the coupe is the race-bred side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula.“It’s just pure fun, fast, freedom,” he said.To that end, the convertible adds ‘Precision Purple Metallic’ to the Mustang Dark Horse SC colour palette as well as unique brake caliper color options and interior details in Black Onyx and Space Gray.On the perennial question of body rigidity in a high-performance convertible, Ford Racing believes it has the issue covered.Mustang Dark Horse SC Chief Program Engineer Arie Groeneveld said, “Both the Dark Horse SC coupe and convertible have been developed by our Ford Racing engineers.“But instead of prioritizing the convertible for setting lap times, we’ve engineered it to be the ultimate top-down grand touring machine,” he said. The result is what Ford Racing positions as “a set-up tuned for a smooth, comfortable cruise that still stays planted when you lean into the accelerator”.With orders opening in the US before the end of the year, the Dark Horse SC Convertible’s scheduled to hit North American showrooms late in the first half of 2027.Ford Australia has previously stated it has "no news to share on any plans" to bring the Dark Horse SC to the local market, with the left-hand drive-only coupe and now convertible set to remain off limits for Aussie muscle car enthusiasts.

A software error has seen thousands of Toyota Camry examples urgently recalled in Australia. The recall concerns 16,238 Camry units built from the 2024 to 2026 model years, according to a notice from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications Sports and the Arts.“Due to a software error, the combination meter may fail to illuminate visual and audible warnings including dashboard indicators, the speedometer, turn signals, hazard lamps, seatbelt reminders and key in ignition,” the notice read.“Failure of the combination meter to display critical safety information or warning indicators may increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”A spokesperson for Toyota Australia said this issue is part of a global recall, with a small number of reported occurrences in Australia. Toyota Australia will contact owners of affected cars to make an appointment and have the issue rectified free of charge at a dealer. Owners can contact Toyota's recall assist support line for more information. The hybrid-powered Camry is the best-selling sedan in Australia, but it is now facing fresh competition from Chinese rivals the BYD Seal EV and BYD Seal 6 plug-in hybrid. The Camry has experienced a sales surge in 2026, up nearly 40 per cent compared to July 2025.
