You hear the term all the time, but what is a muscle car? To be honest, there’s no hard and fast definition. Just as a coupe can be either a two-door or four-door car depending on your point of view, different enthusiasts will describe the muscle car concept differently, and there’s a range of debatable points on offer.

Replacing a legend of any sort is a tall order. But when the legend in question is Chevrolet’s celebrated small block V8 engine (which ran from 1954 to 2003 in Gen 1 and Gen 2 forms, powering everything from Corvettes to pick-ups) then any engine family attempting to replace it has enormous boots to fill.

Officially Australia’s premier racing series is known as Supercars. But to most people it’s still called V8 Supercars, and it’s a more approtiate name because the series has always been contested with 5.0-litre V8 engines.
