The Mini Cooper is a survivor, seeing off rivals like the Fiat 500, VW Beetle and Alfa MiTo, while remaining true to its sporty heritage and fashion-forward attitude. And though the current hatch has been around for eight years and so is showing its age now, two facelifts, tech upgrades and spec improvements have kept it fresh. The British icon remains a unique, likeable and driver-focused option.

There are performance premium SUVs, and then there is the Mini JCW Countryman. Sitting on the top of the retro crossover's range, it adopts much of the same powertrain upgrades as the related BMW X2 xDrive M35i, for a heady turn of speed underpinned by all-wheel drive control. With generous equipment levels and a surprisingly supple ride, the result is a charming, great-value proposition.
