Forget Supercars, lawn mower racing is Australia's best motorsport

By Mitchell TulkMitchell Tulk

What could be better than racing and mowing your lawn at the same time?

In 1988, five men challenged each other to a race around the hills of Harrietville Victoria, not in cars, but in lawn mowers.

This was the beginning of the Australian Ride-On Lawn Mower Racing Association (AROLMRA) which still exists today.

There are currently six different classes that range from Standard mower, Standard modified mower, Junior and Super modified A through to C categroies.

Class A is for the big guns where the mowers can be fitted with an engine no bigger than 450cc and can produce a maximum of 22kW.

All blades removed so you won’t find Jim's Mowing using his race mower in-between events of which AROLMRA holds up to 10 each year.

The sport has a growing popularity with clubs in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Nowra, while Dubbo played host to the first national event back in 2009.

America and England also have lawn mower racing events, so it's not long now until there's a world championship.

Sir Stirling Moss, Derek Bell and Kimi Raikkonen are no strangers to racing mowers, so there's no reason why other F1 drivers couldn't get invloved as well.
