Renault’s family SUV keeps fighting the good fight.
The French brand is bulking out its range of the updated Koleos to battle the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage, after more than nine years on sale.
The range-topping Techno grade joins the base Evolution variant in the revamped line-up.
The Techno is available in two- and all-wheel drive layouts, and is priced from $39,990 (before on-roads) and $42,490, respectively.
That’s a sharp price that puts it below mid-size SUV mainstays such as the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage, and brings it in line with Chinese rivals such as the GWM Haval H6.
All versions use a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 126kW and 226Nm matched to an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Renault claims the Koleos drinks 8.1L/100km in front-wheel drive guise and 8.3L/100km when paired with all-wheel drive. It only requires cheaper 91 RON regular unleaded petrol, too.
Techno variants have 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, in-built sat-nav, an eight-speaker Arkamys 3D stereo, an 8.7-inch multimedia screen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster.

Leather-accented seats are heated and ventilated in the front row.
Renault backs the Koleos with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, and servicing is required every 30,000km or 12 months.
Renault Australia boss Glen Sealey said it has kept the Koleos competitive in the most popular new car segment in Australia.
“This freshen-up means we can continue to offer a premium mid-size SUV at an attainable price point,” said Sealey.
“We know there is a lot of competition in the mid-size SUV market but our customers appreciate the ease of functionality of our car.”
