India’s Mahindra has revealed its newest pair of electric cars, the BE 6e and the XEV 9e.
Dubbed the 'Electric Origin SUVs', both models wear a swooping coupe-like body and sit on new in-house INGLO EV platform and artificial intelligence software, which Mahindra calls “the fastest automotive mind in the world”.
Australia is expected to be in the box seat to receive both models in due course, with Mahindra's local division telling CarsGuide: "Mahindra plans a phased, calibrated international rollout of the Electric Origin series, starting with right-hand drive (RHD) markets. We will make announcements of launch at the appropriate time."
Where Mahindra's new models differ is in their styling and positioning, with the BE 6e going for sporty short overhangs and sharp bodywork. Measuring 4371mm long and 1907mm wide, the BE 6e is a small SUV with sights on the BYD Atto 3 and Hyundai Kona Electric.
The XEV 9e's longer body and softer edges cater to a more luxe-focused customer base. Its extra size — 4790mm long, 1905mm wide and 1690mm tall, though with an identical 2775mm wheelbase — makes the family-focused EV a rival for the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV5.
There will be the choice of a 59kWh battery pack and a 79kWh battery pack on both models, with Mahindra claiming 682km of range on the BE 6e and 656km on the EV 9e when fitted with the latter option.
That said, testing has been certified according to India’s Modified Indian Drive Cycle (MIDC) and not the benchmark WLTP used by European carmakers.
Mahindra has borrowed Blade battery cell technology from EV giant BYD for its INGLO architecture, according to Autocar India, which the brand says adopts a three-in-one integrated powertrain consisting of a single electric motor, inverter and transmission.
Remarkably, Mahindra is offering a lifetime battery warranty for its first registered owners. It hasn't specified how many units or which markets it applies to, although the timeframe will drop to 10-years/200,000km in the case of ownership change.
With a single motor, Mahindra publishes a maximum power output of 210kW for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.7 seconds for the BE 6e and 6.8 seconds for the XEV 9e.
Mahindra claims a fast charging time from 20 to 80 per cent in “under 20 minutes” when hooked up to a 175kW fast charger.
Both the BE 6e and XEV 9e get five-link independent rear suspension with 'semi-adaptive' dampers, brake-by-wire technology and electronic power-assisted steering.
Mahindra is spruiking both models as “software defined vehicles”, with WiFi, Bluetooth and 5G connectivity underpinned by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295, the fastest chipset in the automotive world. It provides 24GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
There’s over-the-air update capacity as well, while the trio of 12.3-inch screens for driver’s display, multimedia and passenger functions add up to 43.6 inches total. The system comes pre-loaded with more than 60 apps for media and entertainment.
Optional features include an augmented reality head-up display, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby Atmos surround sound technology, an illuminated panoramic sunroof and three preset themes that determine ambient lighting, driver’s seat positioning and climate controls.
There are three drive modes – range, everyday and race – and level 2+ ADAS safety features which includes five radars and one vision camera with the ability to detect animals, pedestrians, barricades and other vehicles.
Additionally, there is a driver and occupant monitoring system to track fatigue (which doubles up as a selfie camera), a surround-view camera and enough parking sensors to enable auto parking.
Converted to Australian dollars, pricing is expected to start at around $40,000 for the XEV 9e and $34,500 for the BE 6e once Indian deliveries commence from late February.
If the brand is able to come close to those figures for its potential Australian arrival, Mahindra's new models have the potential to give everything from the BYD Atto 3 to Tesla Model Y and Kia EV5 a tough time.
