New Skoda Scala 2020 pricing and specs detailed: European Toyota Corolla rival arrives with high-spec base variant

Skoda isn't aiming for the budget end of the market with its Scala small-size hatch.

Skoda has confirmed pricing and specification for its incoming Scala small hatch that will replace the Rapid nameplate from June.

The Scala will launch with two mainline variants, the 110TSI and Monte Carlo, as well as a limited Launch Edition. All variants will share the same 110kW/250Nm four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

Kicking off the range is the 110TSI, available with either a six-speed manual ($27,690 before on-road costs) or seven-speed dual clutch automatic ($28,690).

Standard spec on the 110TSI includes 18-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, voice control, and a wireless charging bay, ‘Virtual Cockpit’ digital dash, an automated tailgate, rear parking sensors with reversing camera, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, cloth interior trim, and tyre pressure monitoring.

Stepping up to the Monte Carlo, which is only available as a DSG auto ($33,390), ups the specification to include black exterior detailing, matching black 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, full LED headlights, sportier seats and alloy pedals, and dual-zone climate control, as well as ‘Sport Chassis Control’ consisting of 15mm-lower suspension and a drive mode selector.

Finally, the limited Launch Edition (DSG only at $34,690) adds body-coloured door mirrors and chrome highlights, alternate 18-inch wheel design, leather/suede seat trim, heated front and rear seats, electric driver’s seat adjust, a larger 9.2-inch multimedia touchscreen with built-in navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay support, high-beam assist, rain sensing wipers, auto dimming rear vision mirror, and auto park assist.

All Scalas have an active safety suite which includes auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and driver attention alert. This suite is increased to include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on the top-spec Launch Edition.

The Scala’s launch date was pushed back slightly due to supply constraints relating to the COVID-19 epidemic and is now slated to hit Australian streets in June. Skoda will be offering drive-away pricing deals at launch, including $700 off the MSRP for the 110TSI variants.

The Scala will be joined by the Kamiq small SUV that is also set to arrive around the middle of this year. Skoda assures us that the same issues affecting the Scala will not affect the launch timing of the Kamiq.
