Korean automaker SsangYong will rebrand to KGM SsangYong in Australia, heralding its new era with a brand-new SUV.

The Torres SUV has its eyes on Australia’s most fiercely contested market segment, the medium SUV, where it will battle established names like the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 along with strong value rivals such as the Haval H6 and new MG HS.

KGM SsangYong has put its best foot forward with a competitive $38,000 drive-away price for the base model Torres. First examples are set to arrive in early October.

It will come in three trims: ELX, Adventure and Ultimate, all of which use a 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder engine producing 120kW/280Nm paired to a six-speed Aisin-sourced automatic transmission.

KGM have previously stated an all-electric, front-wheel drive version of the EVX will land in Australia before the end of the year, and will sport a 73.4kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery sourced from BYD, however, no further details have been provided with this latest release.

For the internal combustion version, the entry model ELX ($38,000) and mid-spec Adventure ($43,000) are front-wheel-drive only, while the all-wheel drive top-spec Ultimate starts at $47,000 drive-away.

As standard, the ELX comes with 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, dual 12.3-inch digital screens for driver’s display and multimedia functions, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate controls, LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking

The Adventure spec adds a power tailgate with smart opening and closing, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Crowning the range, the Ultimate gets 20-inch diamond cut wheels, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, a power sunroof, leather upholstery, eight-way power adjustable front seats, heated rear outer seats and ventilation for the front seats with integrated headrest hangers.

The Torres is a new look for the newly-branded KGM SsangYong, but one that the automaker says draws from classical SUVs.

The Jeep influence is clear with the tough vented grille which, combined with the sharp LED headlight design, gives the Torres a hint of Jeep Avenger. It goes its own way with a faux spare-wheel carrier, rooftop panelling and plastic cladded exterior.

Inside, a floating-style centre makes space for an under console storage area. The Torres provides a generous 703 litres of luggage space with five seats up layout, which increases to 1526 litres with the rear seats folded.

As standard, the Torres comes with safety features such as forward collision warning, high beam assist, safe distance alert, driver attention alert, trailer stability assist and front and rear parking sensors, eight airbags and seat belt reminders for all five seating positions.

Grand White comes as the standard paint colour, but customers can opt for additional metallic colours such as Space Black, Iron Metal, Dandy Blue and Forest Green for $595.

KGM SsangYong have informed CarsGuide that the Torres will be rolled out across dealerships in the coming weeks, with the official on-sale date scheduled for October 1.
