The 2025 MG HS has been released in Australia with a competitive starting price of $33,990 drive-away up to $40,990 for the flagship.
MG’s second-generation HS has a big task on its hands, that is to get the brand's mid-size SUV to perform as well as the popular MG3 hatch and ZS small SUV.
It enters the competitive mid-size SUV segment in three trim levels — Vibe, Excite and Essence — with a petrol engine to start with and two hybrid options due early next year to challenge the Toyota RAV4, GWM Haval H6 and Mazda CX-5.
The price is up $4000 from the HS run-out pricing but for that you get all-new underpinnings, engine and much sharper MG3-like design. Inside, a pair of generous 12.3-inch screens support a digital driver’s display and multimedia touchscreen.
The new HS is physically bigger, measuring 81mm longer, 14mm wider and riding on a 45mm longer wheelbase. The new car sits 21mm lower for a sleeker appearance, with crisp ‘Shard’ rear lighting signatures elevating the looks.
Starting with the Vibe, it includes metallic paint, dusk-sensing LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, auto wipers, keyless entry and push-button start, tyre pressure monitoring, a six-speaker sound system, cloth upholstery and six-way power adjust driver’s seat.
For $3000 more, the mid-spec Excite adds 19-inch alloy wheels, perforated synthetic leather upholstery, navigation, fog lights and 12 months of MG’s iSmart connectivity system.
At the pointy end, the Essence gains a panoramic sunroof, rear privacy class, a power tailgate, front parking sensors, wireless phone charging, eight-speaker audio, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with memory, seat heating and wireless phone charging for $40,990 on-the road.
All HS trims use a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder that develops 125kW and 275Nm, increases of 6kW and 25Nm over the old car.
The HS drives the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, helping the HS to reach 100km/h from rest in a claimed 9.6 seconds.
There’s no more 2.0-litre turbo AWD but a plug-in hybrid (as before, but with a punchy 223kW) and new full-hybrid option, details of which are yet to be confirmed, will join the line-up in the first quarter of 2025.
The MG HS has not yet been evaluated by an independent safety testing body such as ANCAP or Euro NCAP, though it is equipped with a long list of safety features, including auto emergency braking (AEB) with junction detection, lane-keep assist and driver-attention monitoring across the whole range. It also features seven airbags.
MG has recently updated its warranty terms to an impressive 10 year/250,000km guarantee and that applies to the new HS. Examples will arrive in dealers later this week.
