2023 Genesis G70 scores more sting with new engine to ward off BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class

In Korea, the Genesis G70 is now available with a spicey 224kW/422Nm 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.

Genesis has lifted the veil on its updated G70 executive sedan, headlined by a new, more potent engine for the entry-level grade.

Currently, the base G70 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that outputs 179kW/353Nm, but the 2023 version scores a more potent 2.5-litre engine with 224kW/422Nm at its disposal.

Those familiar with Genesis’ product portfolio might recognise this is the same engine and outputs as found on the G80 large sedan, as well as the GV70 and GV80 SUVs.

Paired to the new engine is an eight-speed automatic transmission, which sends drive to the rear wheels with all-wheel drive being optional in the G70’s home market.

In Australia, the 2.0-litre engine is available in the base car for $63,000 before on-road costs, as well as the Shooting Brake variant for $78,191, and there are plans to for the revised G70 to hit local showrooms before the end of the year.

However, Genesis Australia stopped short of confirming the new engines for our market, instead telling CarsGuide “more details will be provided closer to launch”.

If the new engine does eventuate, expect a price rise in line with the update to the entire range.

Of note, the 2.5-litre engine was previously available on the related Kia Stinger sedan in South Korea, though this option was never made available in Australia and the sedan’s end-of-production is set for later this year.

In South Korea, the new base model also receives upgraded Brembo brakes and adaptive suspension – both available on the top-spec 3.3-litre V6 engine variant, which carries over unchanged with outputs of 274kW/510Nm and only available in sedan form.

From the outside, the 2023 G70 sports a new badge design, as well as fresh wheels and two extra paint options – Kawah Blue and Bartna Grey.

In the cabin, the updated G70 is fitted with a new centre console that swaps the chunky three-dial climate controls for a more modern touchscreen approach.
