Shuddering clutch in Ford Ranger

We bought a PK Ford Ranger manual diesel new in 2009, and use it to tow a 1500kg caravan on holidays. Lately we have experienced a shuddering in the clutch while towing. Is this normal or should we have it checked out, and what sort of things should the mechanic be looking for as a starting point?

Without knowing how many kays you have done in it I would guess the clutch is on the way out. Clutches in the one-tonners that have become so popular are typically marginal and some require replacement at quite mileage. Check the clutch, and if worn to the point of needing replacement look at installing a heavy-duty clutch.
