The Tesla Model Y-fighting Zeekr 7X has been confirmed for Australia, with the brand having locked in right-hand-drive production for all-electric mid-size SUV for 2025.

The model is expected to take the fight to the Tesla Model Y, with blistering acceleration and charging times, and a look and feel that Zeekr's Australian boss, Connal Yan, described as "insane".

"Absolutely insane product, top-notch quality, mid-size SUV, full EV, built on the 007 platform," he said.

"Plush materials, comfort, spaciousness, and this platform delivers the 007 to 100km/h in 2.84s – to give you an idea of what this car can do.

"We are determined to bring this model to Australia, with right-hand drive production to begin in 2025."

Australia's Zeekr debut will occur later this year when the X small SUV and 009 luxury people-mover arrive, with the brand now holding in excess of 1000 registration of interest for its models.

Most, though, are for the X, with the brand conceding the 009 will be a niche product in Australia. Both will be sold through a now-forming standalone dealership network, with nine outlets forecast across Australia and New Zealand by the end of this year.

But the 7X promises the most mainstream cut-through, with the all-electric SUV operating in one of Australia's most popular vehicle segments – and going head to head with our most popular electric vehicle, the Tesla Model Y.

Local specification is yet to be fully revealed, but we do expect the 7X to sit on the brand's PMA2+ platform – derived from Geely's 'Sustainable Electric Architecture' – and should be fitted with Geely's 'Golden Brick' lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

That, combined with an 800v architecture, should mean the 7X can add 500km of driving range in 15 minutes. Full driving range is expected to hover around 600kms.

In terms of power, we are expecting outputs to mirror those found in the 007 sedan, which would mean 310kW single motor and 475kW twin motor options.

The 7X measures 4825mm long, 1930mm wide and 1656mm tall with a 2925mm wheelbase.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
