I HAVE a 1999 Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive and keep getting a strong smell in the cab when the engine is working, such as going up hills. The odour is not unlike an airconditioning refrigerant, but is not coming from the airconditioning. I'm thinking some sort of hydrocarbon emission, but cannot work out how it is entering the cab and where it is coming from. The Toyota service people haven't a clue.
IF IT'S coming in when the engine is under load it sounds like a diesel problem. It might be worth having the engine checked to make sure all is well under the bonnet, and check for displaced seals in the firewall that might be allowing the fumes to enter the cabin.
