We have just bought a caravan weighing 1612kg all up. My 2012 Holden Omega V6 ute has a maximum towing capacity of 1200kg, but can be upgraded to 1600kg with the installation of an auxiliary cooling package, the tow bar maximum capacity is also 1600kg. What is your opinion on installing this cooling package initially for some short distance towing until we decide upon another vehicle on which to tow the van on some longer distances.

If you're towing on the flat and not overloading the transmission you might get away without upgrading to the cooling package, but if your short distances include hills you should upgrade it. If you don't you're putting the transmission at risk of overheating and being damaged.
