Black smoke on 2007 Toyota Prado

In the past 12 months black smoke has been coming from the exhaust of our 2007 Toyota Prado. Today, out of the blue the oil light came on followed by the engine light, then the battery light, and finally it lost power and stopped. I have seen other reports regarding this issue and we currently have mechanics want to replace the engine at a cost of anywhere between $16,000 and $22,000, but noticing there seems to have been problems in the past and the fact we have looked after the car with regular servicing where would we stand in approaching Toyota. It's done 217,000 km and feel we should not be needing to replace the engine after just seven years. Do you have any advice?

It's not an uncommon problem. It starts with a leakage past the fuel injector seals and ends with the oil pick-up in the sump blocked by a carbon build-up. Eventually the engine loses oil pressure and the engine is destroyed. Toyota recalled and fixed affected vehicles in other countries, but chose not to do anything here. You could try approaching the company to get some compensation for the cost of replacing the engine, Toyota has done it for others who have pressed their case. If that fails you could consult your state consumer affairs people.
