Ask Smithy Xtra Burning smell in Maxima

There's often a smell of burning friction material coming from under the bonnet of my 1995 Nissan Maxima when I stop. I have recently replaced the front brake rotors and pads, but am fairly certain there isn't a problem there. I can't identify the source of the smoke and the temperature gauge is telling me all is well. I can remove the radiator cap without drama immediately after stopping. Any clues?

The burning small could be from a hot engine. Check the cooling system and make sure it has coolant; I wouldn’t expect to be able to remove the radiator cap as easily as you say you can after running the car for some time. The fact that the temperature gauge is saying all is well doesn’t mean it is.
