Matt Damon to star in new Ford vs Ferrari war film

By Iain KellyIain Kelly
This battle is iconic as the Ford vs Holden rivalry.

The Ford and Ferrari wars were one of the most amazing sporting tales of the 1960s, and Matt Damon has reportedly signed on to star as the head of one half of the battle. Damon, the action star famous for portraying Jason Bourne, has stepped in to replace Tom Cruise who was to play Carroll Shelby.

Shelby, winner of the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hour and creator of the brutish V8 Cobra sports car, assisted Ford with their program to beat Ferrari at Le Mans.

The war between the two famous marques was sparked when Enzo Ferrari renigged on a deal to sell his company to Ford, who took it personally. Ford developed the iconic GT model (known colloquially as the GT40 due to its 40in height) in response, and after several years of development Shelby's Fords laid waste to the Italians for four years straight.

Variety reports James Mangold (Logan, Walk The Line) will direct. There is no release date stated.

Iain Kelly is the revhead behind The Creators Online.
