The Swedish supercar gods took a cleaver to Bugatti’s claim of building the fastest production vehicle in the world at the start of November, but now they’ve actually been confirmed as breaking five land speed records for production cars over those amazing days in the Nevada desert.

Using the same 1360hp Agera RS used to break the 0-400km/h-0 record several months ago, the Swedes brought the fight to VW using a closed off section of highway through remote Nevada, which used to be used for the iconic high-speed Silver State Classic road race.

Just a 1MW engine...

In two days they not only set the record for the fastest production car built (446.97km/h or 277.87mph, an average of two runs in different directions), but also reset their own 0-400km/h-0 record by nearly three seconds (now 33.29secs).

Take that, Benz!

They also beat three 79-year-old records set by Mercedes-Benz on stretches of the (then-new) Autobahn in 1938; highest speed over a flying kilometre (445.54km/h or  276.9mph), highest speed over a flying mile (444.66km/h or 276.36mph), and highest speed achieved on a public road (457.49km/h, or 284.55mph).

If you had to pick between the Chiron or the Agera RS, which would it be? Tell us in the comments.

A love of classic American and European cars drove Iain Kelly to motoring journalism straight out of high school, via the ownership of a tired 1975 HJ Holden Monaro.  For nearly 20 years he has worked on magazines and websites catering to modified late model high-performance Japanese and European tuner cars, as well as traditional hot rods, muscle cars and street machines. Some of these titles include Auto Salon, LSX Tuner, MOTOR, Forged, Freestyle Rides, Roadkill, SPEED, and Street Machine. He counts his trip to the USA to help build Mighty Car Mods’ “Subarute” along with co-authoring their recent book, The Cars of Mighty Car Mods, among his career highlights.  Iain lends his expertise to CarsGuide for a variety of advice projects, along with legitimising his automotive obsession with regular OverSteer contributions. Although his practical skills working on cars is nearly all self-taught, he still loves nothing more than spending quality time in the shed working on his project car, a 1964 Pontiac. He also admits to also having an addiction to E30 BMWs and Subaru Liberty RS Turbos, both of which he has had multiple examples of. With car choices like that, at least his mum thinks he is cool.
