Mitsubishi Outlander and Mirage at the motor show

Small cars and SUVs are the segments to be in and Mitsubishi will have two new combatants as its headline act.

The all-new Outlander and the return of the Mirage will be stars of the show for the Japanese brand. The middle child of the brand’s SUV family boasts more high tensile steel in its lighter body and will sport the company’s own turbo-diesel powerplant, as well as other drivetrain upgrades when it arrives for the motor show.

Set for a showroom appearance in November, the Outlander range is more aerodynamic and has dropped the V6 in favour of turbodiesel drivetrains, including long-awaited automatic transmissions. The medium SUV will also be showing off new active safety features for the brand, including its Forward Crash Mitigation System that detects other vehicles and automatically hits the brakes to reduce the impact or avoid a forward collision.

The Outlander will also have adaptive cruise control to maintain set speeds and following distances from other road users “even at the very low speeds experienced in heavy traffic congestion,” says Mitsubishi. An interior upgrade has also been wrought on the new SUV, which will also have three rows of seating, more luggage space (accessed by a powered tailgate) and full iPod integration among its cabin highlights.
