    Toyota HiLux: Can I upgrade the tow rating?

    We want to tow a caravan that has a gross mass in excess of 2500 kg behind our 2009 SR5 Dual Cab Hilux. Given that the Hilux is rated to 2200 kg I'm wondering if I could uprate it to 2500+ kg towing capability by installing a computer chip and fitting a 3-inch exhaust? Would I also need to upgrade my tow ball?

    It's not as simple as increasing your vehicle's grunt, you also have the bear in mind its braking and handling, and things like its springs, shock absorbers, wheels and tyres. You also have to be aware that by exceeding a vehicle's maximum towing load you could void your insurance and actually be illegal.
