Nissan Pulsar 2000: Sudden loss of power

Every now and then, without any warning, there is a sudden power loss in my 2000 Nissan Pulsar. It only lasts for a few seconds and then it's back to normal. The mechanic suspected it was the fuel pump, but replacing it didn't fix it. What could it be?

If there is a sudden loss of power, as you describe, I would be looking for an electrical fault, perhaps a faulty sensor, such as the crank angle sensor.
