Chains that bind

WE HAVE just bought a new, automatic Ford Focus, and recently went to Lake Mountain. We hired snow chains (195/60/R15), and after fitting them noticed the chain was touching a front shock absorber. I asked our Ford dealer, but they don't know anything about it. We are planning to go to the snow fortnightly. Do you have any solution that won't cost us a lot of money?

MY FIRST reaction is that there must be something amiss, either with your car, or the chains you have used. I can't believe Ford has made such a basic error, given that the Focus is designed in Europe where chains are regularly used in snow areas.
