Buying a car from interstate

How would I go about buying a used car interstate and getting it back to Melbourne where I live and get it registered in Victoria?

You would do the normal checks with the local registration authority in the state the car is currently registered in to ensure it is not a write-off and that it is free of finance before you buy it. Once you've got it back to Victoria you only need to have a roadworthy check done on it and present that, along with signed transfer documents from the previous owner and you can get it registered. If you're unsure you could talk to the people at Vicroads about the process.
