Isuzu D-Max: Water in fuel warning

We recently completed a three-week tag-along tour north from Alice to the Gulf then across to Cairns as part of a group with six 4WDS of various makes. Amongst a few minor issues the only persistent problem was a recurring warning of water in fuel in a near-new Isuzu D-Max necessitating regular stops to drain the filter and then to disconnect the battery in order to re-set the computer to remove the vehicle from "limp mode". As we had all filled up with diesel at the same places we were wondering why the problem was unique to the D-Max? We did experience regular water crossings and for the last week heavy rain. Eventually the tank was drained in Longreach with the RACQ recommending parking the vehicle on an extreme side slope to get the last water out. Rob Francis' report of the poorly located fuel tank breather pipe in the wheel arch (Carsguide, November 22) seems to have nailed the real problem. Always enjoy your great articles.
