Toyota LandCruiser: good oil

I GOT a giggle from your response to a question about the Toyota LandCruiser HJ60 (Carsguide, January 26). If anyone approaches a dealer for this backyard fix they'll get short shrift. I was a hand/road tester for a Toyota dealer when the HJ60 was current and if I had suggested we fitted these, I would have been out. The seals between transfer case and gearbox did allow the transfer to pump oil into the gearbox and a hose between the filler plugs was a common fix, but the idler shaft was often stuffed from no oil, so I can't imagine anyone charging to fit them.

AS you suggest, it was a fix sometimes used to overcome loss of oil. It would have been useful to stop the oil problem even after the idler shaft had been fixed.
