Nissan Patrol 2001: Sudden shut down changing from 3rd to 4th

I was changing from third to fourth gear when my 2001 Nissan Patrol 3.0-litre turbo diesel just shut down without warning or unusual noises. The vehicle now just winds over, but will not fire. Have you heard of anything similar?

That model was known around the trade as the ‘grenade’, as it was just a matter of time before it blew up. I would suggest it could have.
