The Mazda 6 sedan and wagon arrive next month, and could be followed by two coupes, with one in range-topping MPS spec. The Mazda6 coupe is likely to be unveiled at next year’s Moscow motor show – where the new Mazda6 sedan was revealed this year – according to Auto Express in the UK.
The report says drivetrains for the standard coupe will include the 129kW/420Nm 2.2-litre turbodiesel in the sedan line-up (seen here in the CX-5 compact crossover SUV) but that Mazda is likely to power the MPS version with a turbo petrol four-cylinder good for 190kW.
The MPS is tipped to be also borrowing the CX-5’s all-wheel drive system, following the formula of the original all-paw Mazda6 MPS sedan that arrived here in 2007. It was powered by a 190kW/380Nm turbo 2.3-litre four-cylinder mated to a six-speed manual, and Mazda will be keen to polish the shine on any MPS halo.
“There is a high potential for (the MPS), and it would be helpful to the brand,” Mazda program manager Hiroshi Kajiyama told Auto Express.
