  • What are the best van options for wheelchair modifications?

    From the sounds of things, you need a vehicle that can accommodate the wheelchair as an actual seat in the car rather than having the chair folded and stored for the journey. With that in mind, a van or people-mover is by far the best best bet and the news is good, because there are plenty of choices. For a while there, people were converting Ford Falcon station-wagons for this task, but since the Falcon is no longer made, vans have become the new default vehicle to convert. Which makes plenty of sense.

    There are specialist firms around that will carry out whatever conversion you require and tailor-make the ramps, lock-down points and grab-rails you need to make it work for you. Switched on companies will sit down with you and discuss your precise requirements and engineer something bespoke if necessary.

    At the moment, the list of car choices is pretty long and includes the new Hyundai Staria, VW Caddy, LDV G10, VW Caravelle, Renault Kangoo, Renault Trafic, Hyundai iLoad, Mercedes-Benz V-Class, Toyota HiAce and, in case you need something really big, even the Toyota Coaster.   • Can the clutch wear out on a Renualt Trafic if the hydraulic robot control unit is faulty?

    Clutches are deemed wear and tear items, which is why they wouldn’t cover the replacement cost. While 80,000 km is not a lot of kilometres for a clutch replacement it is getting near the kilometres that you would anticipate it. The two things shouldn’t be related, I would guess that they saw the clutch was nearly worn-out and it was deemed best to replace it now.

  • Disco dilemma

    SOUNDS like you need a van. The European vans are way ahead of the Japanese rivals in every aspect except price. They can be tricked up with all sorts of accessories that can look very cool. The Vito is worth considering, as are the VW Transporter and the Renault Trafic. If you can get away with a smaller van, look at the VW Caddy. The Japanese vans don't rate highly in crash testing, but the European vans have all the safety systems you'd expect in a passenger car.

  • A wheelchair conversion

    IT'S really too early to speculate on the reliability of the present-model vans. I would be surprised if you needed a van as big as the Sprinter or Ducato to transport your 13-year-old daughter. I would take a look at the Vito, Transporter and Trafic before the Transit. The latter has a pretty ordinary reputation for reliability. Have a talk to the people at Capital Special Vehicles, who specialise in doing the conversions.

If you buy the entry-level Pro model, you'll get the most basic van in the range. It has a tailgate, single kerbside sliding door, and cloth trim inside the cabin.

Opt up to the Premium version and you get dual sliding doors and rear barn doors, which will no doubt appeal to tradie customers.

Crew van models score glazed rear doors, and the Lifestyle variant is more about creature comforts, even including items like sunshades in the opening rear windows.

There are seven colour options for the new Trafic 2023 range, but sadly the iconic Bamboo Green of the pre-update model is no more.

Renault Trafic 2023 Seats

The Renault Trafic range comes standard with three seats up front - a two-seat bench for passengers and a more adjustable and comfortable driver's seat.

Buyers who wish to option in a single bucket seat for one passenger can do so, too.

The interior of the facelifted Renault Trafic has seen some significant changes, including a new dashboard design with redesigned controls, extra storage options, and most importantly, a new 8.0-inch touchscreen multimedia unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The switches are straight out of the Renault passenger car range and add a bit more posh factor than before, and tradies will be happy with the number of storage spots and hidey holes in the cockpit.

Choose a SWB (short wheelbase) cargo van and there is up to 5.8 cubic metres of cargo space on offer.

All models come with multiple tie-down hooks and half-height wall lining, and there are optional floor coverings, and an optional steel bulkhead with window on the base model Pro, too.
