As manufacturers scramble to fill an emerging hot SUV niche, Toyota's first effort is predictably conservative.

As the top-spec Honda HR-V in 2022, the e:HEV L wears a pricetag of $45,000 driveaway, and comes fully loaded with most of the equipment you would expect in a box-fresh model.
With the inclusion of 18-inch wheels, keyless entry, push-button start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, rear privacy glass, a powered tailgate, dual-zone climate control, automatic wipers and leather-accented interior, the HR-V e:HEV L certainly features an attractive equipment list.
However, some items are missing, such as a wireless smartphone charger, power-operated front seats and a sunroof, but the e:HEV L's ballooning pricetag is also offset by its high-tech hybrid powertrain.
Under the bonnet, you will find a 1.5-litre petrol engine and two electric motors, combining to output 96kW/253Nm to the front axle via a continuously variable transmission.
This is good enough to return a fuel economy rating of just 4.3 litres per 100km, matching the Toyota C-HR Hybrid's claim and better than the petrol-only Mazda CX-30 line-up.
